I was wondering about the performance of a raid 1 mirrored array if the drives have different performance, specificly if I had an I-Ram (or similar) and mirrored it with a 5k rpm laptop drive (for silence). Would this provide the speed of the I-Ram with the data security of having a backup on non volatile media or would the whole lot run at the laptop hdd speed

Chears.

Unfortunately, no.

Hardware RAID-1 will run at the speed of the slowest drive.
