Guys,
Can anyone recommend the best AGP card for up to £250. I can't go PCIe so whats the best oput there. The X1950pro looks good but with only 256Mb not sure.
Well its pretty much going to be between the X1950pro of the 7800GS with 512Meg. According to this artcile the X1950 is the better AGP card than the 7800GS but they could not do a direct comparrison because at the time of writing the X1950 had not been released for AGP.
The gainward 7800GS availiable at www.overclockers.co.uk is apparently just as fast at the X1950 (has 7900 clock speeds), comes with 512MB and is bang on your budget, however apparently the performance of the two is very simliar and the 7800GS is a lot more expensive(£60+).
Brilliant thanks for that. I think it might be better going for the 7800 as it has 512Mb on board which might just prolong it's life a bit more. Also I think the 7800 is a better over clocker if and when I need to.
go with x1950pro since it has more pixel shader than 7800gs. most current games use lots of pixel shader.
don't concern too much with the memory it has. the important thing is the memory bit interface which is 256 bit for both x1950pro and 7800gs.
if the games needs more memory, it will take the rest from your random access memory. so the 256mb is good enough if you have enough ram in your system.
Although there is no AGP comparison, the PCI-e outperforms the 7800GS- so if its cheaper & has more memory (than the tested card), it seems like a no-brainer.

For the fastest AGP card look for a "Gainward 7800GS+". Notice the +. It is basically a 7900GT GPU stuck on a 7800GS.

Like I said, Ive been very happy with it indeed.
But that was a purchase from 3 months ago. Today you can get a X1950 Pro for £90 less. Looking at the vga charts, the X1950 Pro PCI-E 256mb card still performs better. And the sapphire above has 512mb ram. So, even without a agp score, still seems like a no brainer.
Of course, Im more than happy with my 7800GS+.. but technology moves on
That Gainward is a 512MB 7900GT but with slightly slower memory clocks. Either way, the Sapphire X1950 pro 512MB AGP will be an easy match for it. I think more often than not the X1950 pro will win out; just dpends on what game. Given it should be cheaper, has better IQ, and at least equal performance, the X1950 pro gets my vote.
Thanks for your comments guys, Id like to stress though that according to the specs the Sapphire X1950Pro 512Mb has only 8 pixel pipes compared the the Gecube X1950pro 256mb which has 36. mmm not sure about the Sapphire. The Gecube is £187 for 256mb though
That cant be right, what I think has happened is that the web site has got pixel pipelines andvertex shaders mixed up. I believe that the x1950 is supposed to have 36pixel shaders and 8vertex. There could not be at discrepency of 28pixel shaders between two x1950's, ATI specifies the number of pixel and vertex shaders each type of card (be it x1600 or x1900) must have.
A card with 8pixel shaders vs a card with 36 would get raped, thy would not be anywhere near the same class.
Oh dear, i've just bought the Gainward 7800GS+, I can't be bothered to wait 19days, i'm desperate. Should still be a good card though. Also I play Doom3 and Quake4 like crazy and occording to the benchmarks the Gainward is slightly better. Im still happy should keep me going for another couple of years.
