I am building a system right now with qx6700 and bad axe 2 MB, 850W psu, 2 g corsair dominator c4d 6400. I will probably wait until 3Q to purchase the R600 (no point in buying early=high price, no dx10, early drivers).

So, as I'm sure I'm in the same boat as everyone else, what's a pretty decent ati chipset card right now for about $100-160. I just want a 256 bit card that will give me nice frame rates in the most popular games.

So far, my list includes:

GECUBE GC RX800GTO2-D3 Radeon X800GTO 256MB 256-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 CrossFire Ready Video Card - Retail $100

POWERCOLOR X800XL256MBDDR3 256-bit PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail $130

GECUBE GC-RX850PG3-D3 Radeon X850PRO 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Gold Edition Video Card - Retail $140

SAPPHIRE 100155L Radeon X1800GTO 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail $155

or, the 1950pro at about $200 (but, really that price is too high for a temporary card)

Alos, I'm definitely open to other suggestions !!!

Thanks guys !

  1. might as well throw this one in too:

    SAPPHIRE 100189L Radeon X1900GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 VIVO HDCP Video Card - Retail 170ish
  2. ok, and I'll bite the bullet and toss this in the mix:

GIGABYTE GV-NX79G256DP-RH GeForce 7900GS 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail $175 (and comes with upgraded heat solution zalman)
  3. Just a warning

If you plan on overclocking I wouldn't suggest getting 2 g corsair dominator c4d 6400. I just bought myself some and found out that they arent using the Micron D9's and that they are using Promos which are horrible for overclocking. I returned them and now I have the Dominator pc-8500's (The cheapest in Corsairs line of Dominators that actually uses highly binned Micron D9's.)

If you want to be able to overclock and still have the Dominator and get the Micron D9 ic's you will have to pay more and get the Dominator pc-8500c5d.

If you cannot afford them then I suggest you get these, they are made my crucial which is owned by Micron and they use the Mircon D'9.

And they look really cool with the leds on top that monitor cpu and memory usage and the leds on the bottom that glow a mystic blue around the base of the memory.

Here is what Corsair wants to do to make up for the people that were misled by Corsair when they got the Dominator pc-6400 before Nov. 28th

Corsair is willing to make amends with customers that believed they were purchasing Micron-based parts before today. We understand the confusion and would like to make the following offer to anybody who purchased a 6400C4D kit before today.

Corsair will replace your 6400C4Ds with 8500C5Ds, which are Micron based, for the difference in price. To take advantage of this offer, please write me an email with the subject line “6400C4D” and include a copy of your receipt. NOTE: This offer is only valid for people with receipts dated November 28th, 2006 or earlier. Send this email to me at georgem@corsairmemory.com

Again, please be sure to include 6400C4D in the subject line so that your replacement can be processed correctly.

Corsair appreciates your understanding in this matter, and we look forward to serving the enthusiast community in the future by continuing to make the world’s fastest memory. Thank you.

  4. Nvidia 7900GS for $150 beats all of them in that price range (except for the x1950 Pro, but that is $200.)

It's selling at Best Buy for $150, my friend got it and really likes it.
  5. found a 7900gt for 200...whatcha think ???
  6. Improvement from 7900GS to 7900GT at 1280x1024 resolution are as follows.

    23.8% faster - HL2:Episode 1
0.59% faster - Hard Truck Apocalypse
36.4% faster - Oblivion (outside) - (kinda skewed, it was 8.8 fps vs 12 fps)
    25.4% faster - Oblivion (inside)
    19.1% faster - Prey
15.4% faster - Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends
    5.26% faster - Titan Quest

    Average of 17.983% faster

While the cost premium is 33.3% more. You decide what you want to spend for a temporary card. Personal opinion is that the 7900GS will suit you fine, better to save the money for the future.
