Is it possible to have two phone numbers residing on the same GSM phone? I
would love to be able to combine my work and home number on the same
handset. Is this available?

Technically possible, but not available. You can have a 2nd number
permanently forwarded to a 1st number.

That's probably the best solution, unless you have Nextel which does
allow for two numbers on one phone/account.

Well I'm not sure this is an answer to your question, but I do have two
numbers attached to my sim card. Before you get excited, its not what
you think. I have my main phone number that everyone has, then I have
another number that almost useless that even Cingular know nothing about.
Just after I rolled my number from T-mobile to Cingular I started to get
calls on my phone that shows "Incoming data call". It also displays the
phone number of the person who was calling and I even tried calling the
number only to get an operator on some business's PBX. The bad news is
whenever I get once of these call I can either let it ring until the
person hangs up or reject the call I can't answer it and it will not
roll to voicemail. A few weeks ago I got lucky when someone tried
calling from a home phone number. When I call it back, I discovered he
was dialing a completely different number from my own. When I got that
number I did some testing of my own. Anytime I dial it a data call rings
on my phone. The number just rings and rings. When I reject the call the
person gets a fast busy.
When I called Cingular and told them what I discovered they didn't know
what to do. They were unable to help me even when I gave them the other
phone number.
So it can be done as I do have two phone numbers attached to my phone,
but other than being annoying when someone dials the other number, it is
totally useless.

The circuit-switched wireless internet has a phone number associated
with it, even though you can't do much with it. Think of it as a modem
line for your phone. If you're really enterprising you can try to
figure out your second number (does your phone have a "show my
numbers" option? Does a friend's phone so you can swap SIMs and try?).

It's called "Alternate Line Service". As John said, it's possible on
some GSM phones and it has actually been offered in a few places.
Apparently works just like a wired 2-line phone--two numbers, receive
incoming calls on both lines, select the line for outgoing. Totally
different than two NAMS with one forwarded to the other. Someone who
had it awhile back said it had a few problems, especially with roaming
and voice mail(s). I'm surprised they don't push it a bit more--it'd be
perfect for people needing both personal and business numbers on one
phone. Assuming it had seperate voice mail and seperate forwarding
options for each line I'd drop my one-number service in a heartbeat
(PITA if you don't want the public getting your real cell callerid). I
asked Cingular about it a year or so ago--said "it might be offered in
the future" whatever that meant.

Thanks to everyone for your input.
I was just hoping to only carry one phone to handle both numbers. It is a
violation of company policy to use my work cell for personal business. And a
violation of my policy to use my minutes for compnay business. I will wait
for the time when a two line service is available.
Thanks again,
Steve

You could simply carry both SIMs, and switch them in one phone as desired.

Blue collar.
I am a System Tech with SBC.
You would think a phone company would have a little flexibility with phone
use.
Go figure.

So they give you an SBC phone with pretty much unlimited use, but they

That's why I caveated it. Some in ths group have talked about hanging
their laptop off the phone and calling it from a landline on the data
number, thus providing a reverse dialup internet connection from the
phone.
I'm sure someone could come up with a useful reason for doing this,
but otherwise I think we've answered the original question...

But nobody came up with a reasonable 1 phone solution.

It sounds like you have CSD (Circuit Switched Data) on your account.
Call them and them to see if you have it, then ask them to remove it.
In the billing system, when you provision an account for CSD, you
actually have to pick a 2nd data number (it's kinda automated though).
However, after provisioning, I haven't been able to find (see) the
number. When this number is called, exactly what you say happens:
Phone will ring with an alternate ring (check ur options) and it
displays: must be answered with data device, i.e., PC." Speaking of
ringing options, for now, you can go into your handset options and set
it for "no ring" or silent on data calls.

I have two numbers (NAMS) in my handset although both cannot be "active"
simultaneously. When at work, I enable my work number. At other times I
enable my personal number. The phone responds only to the "enabled" number
and disregards the other. Calls to the "non-enabled" number go unanswered
or go to voice mail. Been doing this for years.

He didn't say if he wanted to keep his home phone or just have two numbers.
I'd suggest looking at a TELCO 'granny' phone. The landline companies in the
past had a limited use landline that was limited in the number of out-dials,
not incoming. It would be interesting to order one, put it on call
forwarding to your cell and forget about it except for maybe $12/mon fee.

if you did do this forwarding idea, when you call people back on
'business' you could dial *67 to block your cell #
