Is it possible, or is the newest update to the forums actually an improvement??
Given that every other change BOM has made has actually made the forum worse, Im suprised to see that some things like screen width, info bar option, and ad opt out have been fixed.
Of course, it doesnt look like they actually proof checked their own work....theyve croped text on the left side. Goobers.

No it still sucks, just more now. It also seems to take longer for the information on the right hand side to load. Instead of doing something useful like perhaps adding a small message balloon that briefly appears over the "mystery" buttons, they just put the same, if not more "mystery" buttons in box at the top of the forum header.
The forum is still counter-intuitive and a room full of well-trained monkeys could do better.
I don't know.
But I'm glad to see the Sylvan advertisement is gone.
I get a strange drop down whenever I hover over "quote message" that makes the icons drop down, and consequently off my pointer, which makes it pop back up, then get selected again, etc.
IOW, all I see is stutter unless I place my mouse at the bottom of the icon and it overlaps both icon positions.
Bad.
And what is with this side crap? I really REALLY do not need more clutter on the page when I am reading posts.
I and I OH so LOVE the ads that are now on the top right!!!!
I mean, if they could make this site any harder to hide while surfing at work I would have to, well STOP COMING HERE.
And I am sure I am not alone in that.
Guys, if you want to exile your stealth-surfers here, keep making your site look less and less informative and more commercial. I am sure that will increase your professional readership, reputation, and comessurate advertising rates/income.
PS, the "hide this" is rather clunky too, but the option is nice.
I also do not really need that funky looking status bubble/window at the top. KISS is the right way to go with things like that....
Hmmm.. The only ads I get are at the bottom of the page and I've not noticed any changes. Seriously guys try the site in Opera. It just seems to work better that way than any other I have found.
Well, it's a new look, which is refreshing once in awhile...what's up with your profile being shown on top? I know who I am, thank you.
What web browser are you guys using? I'm running firefox, and it's reasonably usable, thank you.
I'm running FF with AdBlock Plus...... Things run fine....
Biggest difference I see is the width.... It's a whole lot wider... Maybe too wide????
The new look is nice.
I agree a layout refresh is nice once in a while.
What I do like about the old layout was the scrolling forum hot topics on the front page.
I don't like the static forum hot topic box on the front page. The scrolling forum hot topics on the old front page linked to more active threads in the forum.
I really liked having the option to pick from more than two dozen forum hot topics on the old front page.
The new front page only displays ten threads with new posts. It's not enough to choose from.
Also the old front page had more latest news topics displayed. But the new front page has four or five latest news topics and the option to view additional pages if you choose to scroll through.
I probably will not pay attention to the latest news topics on the Tom's Hardware front page anymore. I'll just go directly to the TG Daily webpage to view the latest news topics.
On a side note: Evilonigiri your user name makes me think that you are an evil sushi eating woman. Do you care if that's how I think you look like? I imagine you as a chick with big hooters wearing a black leather S&M bondage outfit torturing men with chopsticks. Also could you wear a long red hair wig in my fantasy?
I hope you don't feel insulted. I'm the forum titty pervert.
RC - There are a few problems with the updates on the UK site, like it's still the same. There is a thread going over in the structure section as a lot of the brits still can not Postreply and are having to quote to reply within a thread. You might want to have a quick look as things are clearly not right at the moment.
I don't have any control or anything to do with the change.... I'm just like you, it turned on yesterday & here we are.... Same as the last change....
It's not turned on in the UK at all. We still seem to be getting the old site and the old bugs. The team have been asking for feedback in the thread so the admin team are aware.
fcuking double post crapage. This site is behaving like a total dog for me today.
I got them looking at it.....
Thanks RC. Ultimately I do wonder what the future is for Tom's... This place used to be quite snappy when I first got into it but is just getting worse and worse. I don't even bother with the rest of the site nowadays.
I hear you Man!!!!
I've been around for a long time & it does keep getting worse... There's a lot of other forums out there that are functional & a whole easier to use.... I don't know if we'll ever see a good, highly usable forum again....
I guess I'll keep using what they have around here.... I've met too many good people to just leave.... I don't spend as much time as I used to though.
Maybe the great tech gods are just trying to push my chimp ass back into the world of work
I'm not claiming that I could run this place myself but is it really that hard to have a reply button that works? About as fundamental as it gets for a fcuking forum system.
Keep it simple, stupid!
Don't even get me started on moderator issues on the UK forum.
It's the fact that this is supposed to be a tech site. How can they expect credibility when they evidently can't sort their own tech out? Compare this place with Slashdot where the guys behind the site published the code for the system and created an infrastructure that others hold up as an example of how to manage high volume web traffic.
Bah! I'm having one of those negative days so I'll stop before I start making myself worse.
The site is in desperate need of a hippie filter.
Maybe a more regional approach is what they really need. How about THG Scouse edition? Some subtle tweaks to the forum titles would make it much more accessable for members of your geneticly deficient region. General Networking could become General Network Liberation. The whole software section to be renamed Warez and Linux / BSD to become Dirty Hippie corner.
What's a UK forum? [/4-year-old]
And the Security section could be renamed pointless.
Other would just become The battle cruiser...
We'd need to have a sub-forum for Riser - "Toilets"
He could use it to share with the world his intimate inside knowledge of proctology.
Actually, as far as the format goes, I'm liking the new one a lot better... More room side to side, link to hide the adds on the right...
Can't wait to see it at home on my 19" wide screen. The old format was horrible on that. SOOOOOOOOO much wasted space.
The UK is version is still utterly sh!te. No consistency of approach between the .com and the .co.uk. If I clear my cache down and re-enter my details at the sign in point, it all looks as if I can browse and post fully, before politely telling me I'm not logged in. That's just one of the many gripes I have with this site.
And as a footnote, it's just about the slowest damn site on the 'net. I'm running a Core2Duo, 2GB RAM etc at work, sharing a 50Mbps pipe and it's slower than an arthritic snail just coming out of a coma. IE7 and Firefox are exactly the same. I'm looking at 20-30 seconds just to get into a thread, and the same to jump back to the forum index.
On my 16Mbps link at home (well, 13.8 to be exact), it's still slower than a blind man in a minefield. [/hacked off, big time]
I can't, in FF or IE, use the Postreply button. The quick reply works though. If I want to use any of the formatting options I have to use quick reply and edit this post, that is the only way I can get to the formating options.
Yesterday the U.S. side was still acting up as well. Aside from the incredibly annoying fact that you still had/have to login to view the new posts in a thread, one thread I was reading was in the new format but when you clicked on the previous page of the same thread it showed up in the old format.
Perhaps they really are trying to run this place into the ground.
There must be some kind of Canadian filter.
I haven't experienced any problems with the new website design. Also I haven't had any problems using the forum and it's tools.
Things are kept really simple for Canadians. I also believe that the transmission of anything other than basic HTML pages to Canada is disallowed for the same reasons anything over 128 bit encryption once was.
Being from Souf Efrika, I'm not going to comment on this.

Excellent...most excellent news...the propoganda is working well.

There was this fat c*nt marketing the so-called "Gabriel method" that really f*cked me off. It seems to be gone, so yeah, some improvement.
One of my favourite mistakes on the old North American forum website was the user identification on the left column under Profile was the hyperlink to "More Informations". It took a while before it was changed to "More Information".

You watch too much Japanese crap.
And onigiri has nothing to do with sushi.
| Quote : You watch too much Japanese crap. |
Well if you call Godzilla Nippon crap, that's your opinion.
And for ruining my fantasy, I offer you a rice ball with special sauce.
*Nervously takes the rice ball*
Um...what kind of sauce is this? Normally there isn't any sauce...
I didn't ask Wingding where the sauce came from. I put the first rice ball in a styrofoam container and it melted. That's why the rice ball I offerred you is on a pyrex plate!
It came from an organic, free-range source.

Honestly, for society's sake, you should be crated ...
No, my manhood needs to roam freely.
Er, yeah...
Crazy. I'm listening to that album right now!
OK, I'll watch your video...
Crazy (again). I just noticed James looks a lot like Shaggy from the live action Scooby Doo movies...
I thought he was going to be RickRolled...
