I have a home network that consist of 2 XP boxes, 2 Linux boxes, an Mac OS X and an XBOX. Most of these machines run a file, print, database, media sharing and/or etc. service. How do I set up my home network so that I could just type in the local hostname I gave them (zeus, hera, aphrodite, etc.) instead of their IP addresses when accessing them???

I do not want to set up/run a DNS server.

TIA

If you have one of those computers host DNS for the network you could make manual entries for hostname and the IP it will resolve to. Then point all of the other computers to that one for DNS resolution.

That is about the only way I can think of to make sure it will work across all of those platforms.

While I am unsure of the other devices, the XP boxes will have hosts files in the "system32driversetc" folder. You can at least add the host name/IPs there for the other machines. You'll probably want to have your IP addresses static if you don't already.
