If you're talking connectors, there's the female (wider) and the male (narrower) connections. The female ones are the ones attached to the motherboard and the drive, while the male connectors are on either end of the actual cable. A SATA cable will plug into the motherboard at either end, as it will also the drive. It is omnidirectional.
Its just a plug and a socket. It doesn't matter how you plug it in, as its designed to not be able to be plugged in incorrectly.

Just took a good look at an SATA cable... Looks the same to me. Plugged it in to a drive... Both ends worked. Dunno what your mate's smoking, but can I have some?

I saw it on the internet at ASUS website in the manual.
The SATA cable was described as having a wider end and a narrower end, but it also said that cable can be connected eitherway.
