com/lpt error

I am currently working on a pc that uses dial up internet connection, the modem is fine in the laptop. its a Dell Inspiron 1300. But under device manager there are no ports listed when I try to set up a communication port I keep getting error, I now get a error code 10 that it wont start. I cant query the modem it tells me that the port the modem is attached to cant be opened. I am not sure where to start looking. Can anyone help me get this persons dial up going for her? Thanks.

Go to device manager, select modem, properties, advance settings.

Most internal modems use a com3 port.

it is set at a com3 port. that is why i cant figure out whats going on with it. thanks.

There isn't anything listed under ports because I dont believe that laptop has any com or lpt ports. The port the modem uses will not appear under ports unless it is an external modem connected via serial. You shouldn't have to mess with anything in device manager anymore to make a dialup modem work.
Did you try making a dialup connection with just the default settings out of the box?
