I'm really REALLY not computer-savvy at all so help would be very much appreciated.
i bought a linksys G wireless router to hook up my desktop and my laptop. but my modem isn't hooked up to my computer with the little jack that i was instructed to put into my router. instead, i have a little needle-like cord that screws into my modem.
what should i do? im sorry i dont know any technical names for any of the things i talked about, but i really need help. thanks!

Sound like your modem is using a serial port (D9) and not the Cat5 cable that the router requires. You have 2 options. Ether upgrade your modem or get a router with a com port.

Is your internet service broadband? Many home routers will not share dialup.
