Hi all, I hope you can help. I also apologize for being too wordy. I want to cover everything.

My neighbors have a computer that has become so bogged down with Spy-ware and Ad-ware that it takes 30 minutes to boot up.

So to save all their photos and videos they asked me to put in a new 2nd hard drive, transfer over the things they want & then re-install their OEM MS XP Home Edition.

I’ve installed the new hard drive but it still is not seen by their computer in “ My Computer.”

When I go into the Device manager both are seen there.

When I go to Disc Management I see the C drive ( Disk 0 )
The new Seagate is seen as CD-Rom 1 681 MB. However the computer also sees Disk 1 232.88 GB Not Initialized. It also says it is Unallocated.

Their specs are:

XP Home Edition Version 2002 with service pack 2
Current HD is a 40 gig Maxtor Plus 8. The connection is Ultra ATA / 133.
The CPU is an AMD Athlon @ 1.2 GHz
The RAM is 512

So the new hard drive is a Seagate 250.0 gig Barracuda Ultra ATA / 100 http://www.seagate.com/cda/product [...] 35,00.html

The ribbon cable is the standard Ultra cable with the master drive at the end of the cable.

Here is what I tried:

1st I left the jumper in the original master on CS and had no jumper on the new drive. Placed the new drive in the middle connector – Not seen.

2nd I move the jumper from the CS to the master position on the master drive. –Still not seen.

3rd I removed all the jumpers. – No boot.

4th I put both jumpers for both HD on CS. – Still not seen

5th I went into BIOS to see if there was some sort of an Enable - Disable ATA thing. Nothing like that.....that I saw.

I ran the Seagate DiskWizard and it gives me an error and will not run.

So any ideas on how to get their new drive with all its 250 gigs to be seen in “My Computer” and allow them to move files over?

Thank you in advance.

Try going back into Control Panel>admin tools>Disk Management again. Right click on the HDD you want to be seen.

Click on Mark as Active. You may have to also Format it and Initialize it.

Ummm….Thank You 31computers.

I have to admit I am a bit embarrassed about this. I thought I covered all my bases when setting this up. I feel like a boob for forgetting a step like this. But yes all is right in the world.

Thanks

It happens all the time. we get all excited about building and fixing PC's and forget the calm measured approach that we preach to others!

Happy Computing :D

Just to clarify, Formatting is the most important of those steps. It only needs to be marked active if the intention is to boot from said drive.
