Worth Getting a 8800 GTX?

I currently have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Windsor 2.6GHz and I am just wondering if it's worth it to pick up the 8800 GTX or not.. I've read that a Core II extreme or something would be the best bet for the 8800. So is it even worth getting if I don't have the greatest of processors? Or should I just go with the Radeon x1950XTX? Thanks!

This has been asked before, and yes youre fine with cpu/gpu combo.Alot has to do with your monitor size.At lower resolutions(10/7 or 12/10)the cpu is challenged and the gpu isnt as much.As you go to higher rez's,the gpu becomes the bottleneck. The performance that youd lose at lower res's isnt that great. So for you its fine,if you want suber uber then yes go for a oceed c2d at 3+gigs

Yeah, the 8800 cards show CPU bottlenecks - at low resolutions with AF/AA turned off. And then the difference is between one CPU getting 150+ FPS, and the other getting 100+ FPS. You'll be fine.

The conclusion in the "8800 needs the fastest CPU" article is utter garbage.

If you want the absolute best, go for it.

Even a X6800 is somewhat of a bottleneck, so it's not worth getting the best CPU for it.

Also, with the 8800GTX, you can jack up the resolution, maxed out settings along with AA and AF. At this point, the CPU is a small factor in gaming performance.

Its worth it, but why not wait a month and then compare it to the R600? Then you'll have a chance to pick which is best based on benchmarks of the two. Of course, if you need a gpu now, then the 8800 GTX is the present best. Your cpu is fine, and you can always overclock it a bit.

Seem to see a lot of these questions nowadays...
Maybe it's THG's fault posting that article about the 8800GTX needing the best CPU...

I'll agree that the title of the article can be misleading, but that's only if you don't read it. I'm sick of these morons asking these bottleneck questions referring to that article, when they clearly hadn't READ the article. If they had, they'd know that the article was just trying to show the added performance you get with the fastest CPU, NOT that you absolutely need it, or will be missing something without it. Hopefully then, they wouldn't be clogging up the forumz with these threads.

Yes. I wish that farking article would DIE.

Its almost as bad as the D805 4.1GHz article that spawned endless "how do I get my CPU to run at 4.1GHz?????" threads....
