Hey all, I've been a forumz lurker for years finally have a question to ask. I'm using what's becoming an ancient rig I built in 2001, P4 2.4 1gig RDram, 6600gt. I'm unable to upgrade anything for at least a year, but I might get some xmas cash and was wondering how the X1950 would work for me or is it too much for my cpu? Maybe the 7600gt would be enough.

Thoughts?

Thanks

lol that's what I thought, how low should I go, 7800gs? 7600gt? Or is my 6600 the best (or worst) I can do.

Wow, I'd say with a P4 2.4B you are a bit underpowered to justify such a card. That said, if you are pushing resolutions of 1280x1024 or above, and the options are a $190 7600GT or $250 X1950 pro, I'd still go for the X1950. But in all honesty, I see the 6600gt as a good match for that system and personally unles I found a killer price, I'd stay put as you are until doing a new PCI-e rig.

Yeah rebuilding won't be until end of '07, being stuck with RDram and socket 478 I will need to do a full, ground up rebuild, even my YYcase is way too loud. Maybe I'll just stick to my 6600gt and find a nice 24' lcd in the meantime..

thx for replies btw..

Only problem with that is the 6600GT will choke gaming at a 24" LCD's native 1920x1200 resolution. 8O That monitor would a good reason to go for the X1950 pro. (which leaves no money for the monitor, right)

For a 2.4 Northwood, I'd recommend a 7600GT at most. Performance is very easily upwards of 2x what you get with your 6600GT (the 7600GT beats the 6800Ultra in most benchmarks, for comparison), and power consumption won't be a significant issue. Plus you get SM 3.0 support, which will likely be the basis of most games coming out next year, even though DX10 is coming into play this New Year.
AGP cards are priced a lot higher than equivalent PCI-E (which sucks), but if you manage to find a 7600GT AGP for around 150$, it would be a worthwhile upgrade (in my opinion) while you wait to build a new system.

Other AGP cards to consider are : x850(PRo/XT/PE), if you can find them at a similar price range.

Hope this helps
