Hi,

This is my current situation: I have a cable modem, which i have conncted to a router. To the router there is currently only one computer connected but I will connect more soon.

The IP address which is assigned to my computer when I log on is the same as when I connect my computer directly to the modem in other words the IP, Gateway, Subnetmask and so on which is assigned by the ISP (static).

If i'm not misstaking this will cause problem when I hook up the other computers won't it? Because my ISP is not likley to assigned them all their own IP this must be done on the local network, I'm I right?

Any way, the problem with the router is that it's a ADSL/router and doesn't have a WAN port. So i'm just connecting the modem to a LAN port.

How can I set up my Router so that it dedicates one port to the internet connection (modem), and forwards all internet trafic from and to the LAN to that port (gateway). seperating it from the LAN.

I hope you can understand my problem...it's a little bit hard for me to explaing (not a Networking guy)

Cheers everyone!

Mikael

If its a ADSL/ROUTER it should allow you to connect multiple computer. A router basic function is to share 1 ip with other computers connected to the lan ports. You could always add a second router or just a simple switch/hub. Then connect all computer through it.

Are you sure you're using a router? routers should have wan ports to be connected to a modem or any other internet device.

I think what you have is a modem (because you directly connect it to your PC and your PC has public ip settings)

maybe you could get a cheap wireless router (wireless isn't really that important until you have use for it) most wireless routers have 4 or more ethernet ports on them so you could use that to connect more PCs together.

No,

It is a router...but it is an ADSL/router. Which means that the WAN port is actually a normal phone-line-cable-thing. Which means I can't connect the modem (Cable modem) there because its ethernet.

Also what I'm asking is...if the router assigns me the address 82.24.30.65 which obviously isn't an local area ip will it work when I hook up the other computers?

If it's a router. you should be able to configure it to give out private IPs. Is the router provided by your ISP or did you buy it elsewhere?

It should work if it has routing functions. Check to see if you are not charged on a per ip you use. If so add a second router, then they will only see 1.

No the router was not provided by my ISP, it's not even the ideal one....because it's a ADL/Router and i get my internet via Cable. But i do have a cable modem so that's okay.

I want to have one IP address outwards...but how do I achive that?

Cheers

A true router has only 1 wan IP address. All wan will have a private IP address.

Okay,

But is it possible to set up one of the LAN ports to act as a WAN port. Because, if not...then I can trash the ADSL/Router....

Reply to gotlisch

NO.

Lan Ports can not work as WAN ports

Good, that was all I wanted to know...
