example: 54g /2 = 27mbps ....

What brands do you prefer?

Will it matter if my access point was the same brand as my router?

For best performace it's always better to use the same chipset. So see what is being used is the wireless pc then match the AP to it. If your wireless supports large packets, use it. It will double the wireless connection speed (108, 125 mbps vs 54).
