General perfromance rule for K8 CPUs: The higher the PR number is, the fastter the CPU will perform.
L2 will boost the performance up to 5% in certain cases(when playing games).
The additional 200MHz of the 4600+ will always boost the performace for 9.1%(2.4GHz/2.2GHz). The 4600+ is better choice for sure.
Maybe at 3GHz or more the extra 512kB of L2 cache will boost the performance of the K8 CPU more than the additional 200MHz.

The 4600+ is the better buy. If you google for some benchmarks, you'll note that the 4400+ outperforms the 4200+ (which only has half the cache). However, bumping up the FSB by 200MHz the 4600+ will give you better performance than the 4400+ even though the cache is dropped to 1MB.

I never owned a S939 CPU, but there are some people who say that the 4400+ can overclock better than the 4600+. In my opinion, the 4600+ should overclock better than the 4400+ since it has only half the cache. Less cache means less transistors which means less power is drawn. That in turn means less heat (marginal though) which could help with overclocking.

Perhaps a person with S939 experience can provide you a better explanation.

Thanks guys, went with the 4600, I just pulled the trigger. I'm upgrading from a 64 3200. I don't OC or anything, and my comp is mostly used for gaming. Also boosting to 2gb ram, should keep my socket 939 alive for a while until I make the intel/8800 jump.
Does anyone know if I can just drop this into my current mobo?:

ASUS A8N-SLI BASIC NFORCE4 MB

Will I need to update bios? If so, I don't know how :?

the 4400 has a higher l2 cache than the 4600, which one is a better buy?

the 4800 was on sale earlier today, but already sold out???
I shouldn't have waited...
I would have to ask you first is this for OCing or not? The X2 4600+ is the faster without OCing but OCing both CPU's would bring the x2 4400+ within 100MHz of the X2 4600+ OC.

I think the 4600+ is still a better buy..the L2 doesn't do that much of an effect compared to its clock speed.

But when you start OCing you might get different results

As a general rule, the 1MB L2 cache AMD CPUs perform 0-5% better than the 512K L2 chips of the same clock speed and core type. The 0% gain is in most applications, the 5% gain from 512K -> 1MB is in games for the most part. The 4600+ is 9% faster than the 4400+ in clock speed, so at best the 4400+ will be 4% slower than the 4600+, and at worst 9% slower.

You did the right thing in getting the 4600+. Enjoy your new processor as it should be a decent boost from your old 3200+, especially in multithreaded applications and in improving the smoothness of your computing experience.

Question: Are you overclcoking? Toledo cores are slightly superior overclockers, and that cache will come in handy once you reach the same clock speed ranges
I've personally tested a 1mb cache dual-core Opteron 165, and I got like 2.6ish out of it.

This is really a moot point as AMD stoped making any cpu's with 2mb of L2 cache months ago (that's why they are always sold old...). You never really had it as an option.

my JF got me the 4800Toledo last nite. It was on sale for 242.99 shipped, I checked this morning and they were sold out.
I just checked again and they are back!!! :p
Still ON SALE!
Get one before it goes forever.

I saw that, I'm going to stick with the 4600 anyway, I'm sure it will serve me just fine. Thanks for the advice everyone.

Gee, I just purchased an Opteron 170 with 2 x 1MB of cache and newegg still has two Athlon 64 X2z - the 4400 and 4800 listed for sale - both with 2 x 1MB of cache.
