Do I need a router?

The Com cast guy told me the other day that we can just hook up another PC in our basement, out direct through the wall to the Com cast Inbox outside>Without a router? I missed that.

Normally, you only get 1 IP address so you would need a router for more then 1 computer.

Thanks. That's what I always thought. Presently the modem goes into a router, then a cat5 heads off to an office room, but I wanted to hook up another computer in the basement in lieu of wireless, I asked the Comcast guy here to install digital voice- and he said " just drill a hole in the wall coming outside to the cable In Box and plug in. So, I thought I'd better ask.
