I'm having a quirky problem with the standby functionality on my
Windows 2000 Professional system. If I push the system into standby,
it will stall at the "Preparing to standby" screen (won't standby, but
won't return control of the system either). However, if I push the
system into standby while it is booting up, it will work well
thereafter (for a while anyway). That is, during the first graphical
Windows splash screen (the one with the blue scroll bar at the bottom),
after the keyboard initializes, I can put it into standby. If I do,
then standby will work okay after the system completely boots. If I
don't, then it will stall the next time I try.
Has anyone experienced this before? Does anyone know how to fix it?
Any help is MUCH appreciated.
Here are some specs on my environment:
=== HARDWARE ===
- IBM ThinkPad T22
- 512 MB RAM
- Ultrabay adapter with HDD
- Belkin Pre-N wireless PCMCIA adapter (problem existed before the
adapter was purchased -- cool stuff, by the way)
- IBM optical USB mouse
=== KEY SOFTWARE ===
- Windows 2000 Prof. SP4 + latest patches
- Acrobat 4.0 (was installed when the system worked properly --
probably not the cause)
- Quicken 2005 (recently installed -- known to cause problems as per
other posts)
- MS Office 2003 (was installed when the system worked properly)
- IE 6.0 (was installed when the system worked properly)
- MediaPlayer 9.0 w/Tivo codecs (codecs added recently)
- Tivo Desktop with Tivo ToGo (installed recently)
- a bunch of other software that has been installed for a long time
without conflicts
- Palm Hotsync Manager (not actively running)
- Palm Desktop Alarm
- Trillian 0.7
- NAV 7.01 CE

It's not a shutdown problem -- it's a standby problem. Shutdown works
well. Standby stalls with the message "Preparing to standby". There's
no way to exit this mode or push it into standby -- basically, I have
to force power off the machine once it enters this mode.
