Hi,

I'd like to install SP2, on my desktop, but I'm havig trouble going
online, and furthermore it's a pretty big download for a dial up
connection.

However I already downloaded it for my laptop, can anyone tell me
please

a) will it be possible to copy the already downloaded file to the
other machine in any useable form?

b) if so, what is/are the file(s) called,
c) once transferred (where to?) how do I install them?

Hi,

You'd only be able to copy it and use it if a) it still exist - not likely
and b) you did the full 266MB download, as the express version is specific
to the machine. You can order a copy of it on CD here:

Well, I have two identical 22mb files called
SP2.cab, one in :\windows\service pack files\i386
and the other in \windows\Diver Cache\i386

Now unless I'm totally dumb, a .CAB file contains uninstalled
components. However, your news that the packs contain installation
specific stuff only is a blow.

I do have a friend with broadband, so I could possibly get him to
download the full monty onto a CD. Or I could do it myself there, and
take advantage of being there to help him do the 22 critical upgrades
he needs as well as the 45 others!! Then I could spend half the day
taking out the malware that his carelessness has left him open to! (He
does at least have anit-virus and a firewall installed.)

Hi Ian,

Well, you asked. Yes, the cabs contain unpacked versions of the files - but
that is not all you need, there are many other portions that upgrade
specific parts of the operating system. The express installations identify
which components are missing on any given machine, and only those identified
as not present are downloaded. So this type of download is not something you
can tranfer to another machine. Like I said, if you don't want to risk using
your friend's machine, there is the CD option - there is no charge for it.

Get the CD.
Or check a computer store and see if they still have any free copies of the
CD.

If you have an address where you can get the complete file "sp2" please let
me know. I have the disk ordered but there saying 4 to 6 weeks. I can wait
if I have to but if there is a place please inform me. Thank you

Hi,

It's a whopper at 266MB. The Auto-update version (aka the Express version)
will be smaller as it will only download the parts you need. The full
network version contains everything, including all critical updates since
XP's original release, many of which you probably already have.

Sorry not to quote in context, but when you top posted in reply, with a
proper sig delimiter, my sox doesn't quote anything _after_ the sig. (NOT a
criticism, a statement of fact).

OK. So I managed to get on line, after downloading the .inf file for my
modem. After reading what you and others said, I did decide to download SP2,
partly because my anti-virus sw wouldn't install without at least SP1.

It was a >7 hours overnight download of 113Mb, but at least the installation
seems to have been problem free. So that meant that I could install my
anti-virus sw, download all 6Mb of upgrades/updates and scan.
