Ok I'm upgrading from my 650 Prescott 3.4 and 2GB of DDR400 to this:

Mobo

CPU

RAM: 1gb only

Before you ask I already have a good PSU and I already have BFG 7900GSOC, and Zalman 120mm Cpu fan/heatsink

So I ask you will I be able to OC this cpu to a E6400 no problem? And on games that say they recommend 3.0GHZ and I know the acrhitecture on this is chip far superior to others but what will that game do when it reads my 1.86? Will it still play great. I hope this will be a good gamer because Im on a budget so let me know as soon as you can. Thanx in Advance

You should have no problem overclocking the E6300 to an E6400 or even E6600...

Also, as far as the requirements on games go, the clock speeds they list refer to the older P4 CPUs at the moment... the E6300 completely blows them out of the water.

Thanx Bradfel I hope to see a significant improvement over my 650 Prescott
It's sad to see a $280 cpu replaced by a $180 cpu and be blown by it.

That's usually how it goes... something new comes out and all the old stuff you spent hundreds of dollars on gets shoved aside by something that costs half as much...

This build is going to really suck if you only put 1 stick of 1GB into it. Running RAM in single channel now is about the dumbest thing you can do. Replace the ram you found with This Corsair XMS2 1GB (2 x 512MB) set

Yes, you should be able to OC the E6300 to the same speed as the 6400 or even the 6600 provided you have the supporting hardware to do it. That stick of ram you had is going to limit that ability with such high timings.

Honestly, if you want a good overclock, here is what I would do. It will cost a bit more, but your overclocking needs will definitly be met.

Get the ram set I indicated above, then also swap the motherboard for the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3. I have the same board and was able to get my FSB to 400Mhz. I am running my Core 2 E6600 at 3.2Ghz (after turning the multiple down from 9 to 8. What I am suggesting here is that you use this idea on the E6300. The stock multiple of the 6300 is 7. Turn this down to 6 and set the FSB to 400Mhz. This will do 2 things:

1. Gives you a nice overclock on the CPU, from 1.86Ghz, to 2.4Ghz (the stock frequency of the E6600)
2. Allows your system to run at the best possible efficiency, a 1:1 FSB:RAM ratio.

Thanks for the advice but dual channel has never made very much of a difference for me plus if I bought 512x2 then if i ever wanted to get more than 2gbs I would have to start all over again

There is some performance hit in running a single DDR2 stick, but its not that severe, maybe 5-10% or so. A single stick isn't a terrible thing to do when on a tight budget. Although it really sucks that if you bought 2 sticks you'd get that $40 rebate and so only pay $111.50 per stick vs $138 for your one stick.

The Biostar motherboard will overclock nicely - see the review Biostar TForce 965PT vs Gigabyte GA-965P-S3.

Your 650 Prescott 3.4Ghz isn't that terrible a system. If you weren't planning on overclocking your E6400 I'd say hold off till you could afford a better overall system. But yes, the E6400 based system will be a nice upgrade, especially when overclocked. THG CPU Charts E6400 2.13Ghz vs 650 Prescott 3.4Ghz

Sweet thanx man I guess I'll take one dudes advice and get the 2x512 and stick with biostar because that chart you sent me appears that Biostar is better in OC'ing

I think the 2x512 RAM choice is actually a good one especially if you're overclocking. Why give away even 5% performance?

I don't think the Biostar TForce 965PT is that much better at OC'ing than the Gigabyte GA-965P-S3 as that review seems to show. There were some issues with certain memory (fixed I think) that was holding the S3 back some. It does show the Biostar is a VERY good @ OC'ing with the right RAM and COOLING. With the stock HSF you'll probably make 3.0Ghz before you start seeing (and hearing) the stock HSF start to work too hard to keep the CPU cool.

Well hopefully the Biostar will like the Corsair ram and I hope my Zalman will keep the cpu cool enough in overclocking I hope so that thing is a monster!!! Thanx for all the help guys

And the question is. What is the shortest distance between two points?

Well, you came up with the subject line. So I answered it.
