Looks like I'll be going with the standard upgrade:
E6600
965P board
1 or 2gb ram, undecided on that
If I throw the X1950xt in there, will games @ 1600x1200 be playable? The whole point of my upgrade is to play everything at that resolution. I'm hoping this card can do that. $250 is a lot easier to swallow than $450 for an 8800.
Here's a list of games that I'm playing or will get around to:
Sid Meier's Railroads
BF2 and BF2142
Madden 2007
FEAR & EP expansion
Company of Heroes
Warhammer 40k series
Medievel II Total War
Half Life 2 Episode 1
Call of Duty 2
Oblivion doesn't do anything for me. Think the x1950xt or something cheaper will handle these @ 1600x1200? I don't need 80+fps, just something in the playable fps range. Thanks again
the only ones im not sure of are company of heroes or medievel II. they, if im not mistaken are RTS games so i can't say for certain how they will perform as they aint included in most benchmarks. they are also cpu limited in alot of cases.
I am pretty sure a X1950XT would handle most current games @1600 x 1200 OK ~
But, does your monitor support it?
I was using an 19" Sony CRT right up until 2 weeks ago and bought a 22" wide screen LCD and I noticed the 22" max. resolution would only go up to 1680 x 1050 where as the 19" Sony CRT can handle 1920 x 1440........
I too, ran all my games @ 1600 x 1200.....Call Of Duty 2 / Company of Heroes / NFS - Carbon on the CRT with a 7900GTO
I now play games on the CRT and uses the LCD for movies, net browsing, etc.
I bet you will see choppy framerates in sid miers railroads, that game gets well bogged down as you get towards the end of a level, no matter what graphics card you have
I've noticed that as well. Just when I've built my "empire" up, adding or deleting tracks causes a delay of 2-3 seconds. I have no idea why I like the game, still fun for some reason
