external HDD issues

i have an external hdd that for some reason when i plug it in to my laptop it is only showing three files recycler, msdownld.tmp, and system volume information. the three icons are grayed out. i know that there is about 9 gig of information on the drive but i cant see it. it is usually plugged in to my desktop at home, but seeing i am on the road for the holidays i wanted to take it with me. any one have hany ideas?

Remove the hard disk from the enclosure and hook it up to a computer.
If you can read the files, then you probably just have a bad enclosure.
You can buy a new enclosure at newegg.com, etc.
Check the cables also.
