I've seen debates, or think I have, where people are bemoaning the lack
of a Windows 2003 SE upgrade for the HP 4700.

I've checked my OS version in About and it clearly states it's running
Windows Mobile 2003 Second edition.

Did I misread something or is there another upgrade my Ipaq is missing?

Yes, wrong debate. All HX4700s have Windows 2003 SE. And it isn't an
upgrade.

They are bemoaing, very probably, the lack of VGA support.

Hmm, Well HP has decided not to offer an upgrade so far, the newest versions
of WindowsMobile have Windows Media Player 10 the Windows Mobile SE on the
4705 does not have Windows Media Player 10. Also their are problems with
having both the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled at the same time, while also
having additional today screen plug ins enabled, or running additional input
methods. For "power users" their are real memory limits imposed by the
current hx4700 rom.

I would have presumed that the "real memory limits" would be imposed by
the actual amount of physical free RAM? There are further limits?

Yes, there is a sub part of memory reserved for drivers and today screen
plug-ins. So if you add nothing to your today screen, and do not add extra
keyboards you may have no problems with the memory on the hx4705.

If on the other hand you like a lot of today screen plug-ins. And you also
add additional keyboards, it is relative easy to run out of "driver" memory
while still having free memory. That means you will be unable to use both
Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi or perhaps either.

Enabling HP ProtectTools can also cause problems, where again if you have a
few extra today screen programs running, and you happen to have the Wi-Fi
radio turn on, or the Bluetooth radio turn on, you may not be able to
complete a soft reset. The 4705 will basically hang when trying to soft
reset. This may force a hard reset.

Even adding more internal memory, say 128 MB will not solve this problem, it
is the same problem that the 545X and 555X had when they where first
released. IMHO.

I know for the hx2000 series, they have stated this regarding an
upcoming ROM update:

"HP is currently planning to release a full ROM update beginning in
May 2005 that will address the two issues listed in this document, as
well as including other enhancements and fixes."

Although I wouldn't hold my breath, maybe this will include
MediaPlayer 10 and may also signify that other devices will have ROM
updates around the same time.

Since these devices were released in November of 2004 and because MS
is pushing their new media services that only work on MediaPlayer 10,
I can see MS asking very nicely that manufacturers provide updates for
MediaPlayer.

http://msnvideodownloads.com

Although they may be happy pushing this service with only their Mobile
Media Companions (rx3100, rx3700), where an update was avail in
12/2004.

It's not exclusively an HP issue. My Dell X50c, with the 128M upgrade
suffers from thr same driver space limitation. It is rare for me to be able
to fire up BT or WiFi without having to soft reset first.
