Mobo has onboard sound by Realtek.

Total $885

I still need to pick out CD/DVD Rom, SATA harddrives, LCD monitor, mouse & keyboard. I'm guessing that another $4-500 will get these.

I have an external NEC 3550A DVD DL burner.

This is my first attempt at building my own computer and I would appreciate any input.

Don't let the 512MB on the 7600GS fool you. You are better off getting the 7600GT 256MB. While it has 1/2 the RAM, the 7600GT core and RAM are both clocked higher. The combination of the two is too much for an extra 256MB to compete.

The following 7600GT is $105 + shipping after a $20 rebate:

Cheaper and faster.

Those are the kind of comments I need. Thanks. I'm still trying to feel my way around this computer thing.

I will look around for a PSU replacement and post later. I have to get ready for Doctor's appointment.

Does everything else work with the remainder after I change the GPU to the recommended? Is the case quiet?

It's not exactly a top-notch case, so don't expect it to be too quiet.

Yeah, that PSU is GREAT but it is a bit overkill.....you can save some money on it and get a better case ;) Look into a Lian-Li 7B Plus case.

And DEFINITELY go with the 7600GT, NOT the GS. Very little cost difference overall, but big performance difference.

For your hard drive, look at a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 perpendicular recording w/16 mb cache. Probably a 250 or 320 gig size, it's the best buy right now.

DVD Burner, get whatever you like or is cheap.

What size monitor you planning on getting?

Thanks Skyguy, I will go to New Egg to look at the case and harddrive and report back. I am thinking a 20 inch widescreen. Still need to look for a PSU replacement as well.

Keep 'em coming. 8)

Here is a good monitor for you
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824001083

Big and shiney 8)

Definatly go for the 7600GT over the GS, it is a mutch better card.

Or for the same price you could get a 7800GT
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130035

That will spank the 7600GT easy.

Your PSU looks good, but here is one for a little less W/ more +12V amperage.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817189009

Overkill either way, but better safe than sorry later on.

Does the backlight give you a problem on the monitor.? Glad to hear you like this monitor; perhaps I'll run into a deal when I am ready to do this deal. :)

What else do I need?

Thanks to all for sticking with me. 8)

NICE setup, much better!!!

I'm not completely sold on the idea of that CPU cooler though........ I think there are better options :?

In any event, no I haven't had a problem with backlight to be honest. It's probably no worse and no better than any regular LCD. And here's my overly-simplistic view of backlight: How can it be a problem with the monitor IN USE?? Full of colors, using applications......really, when is it gonna sit there, completely black, just to analyze the backlight bleed? Really, something is wrong there.......think about it. The only time my monitor is like that is when it's on power save and I'm not using it. So I think backlight bleed is making mountains out of molehills, truly.

The color rendering software that comes with the Samsung 22" is AWESOME. I do alot of Photoshop, CAD, and gaming across the board, and the color rendition is great. For the price, you simply can't beat it.

Great rig you got there. Well done.

Your explanation on the backlight suits me fine. Thanks. :)

I only threw in the cooler because I thought I read somewhere that the stock cooler might not be good enough. I'll look around some more.

Thanks for all the help, looks like this is coming together just fine. 8)

your current Xtream 600W PSU is kind of overkill if you want to keep at that system
look for Antec NEO 430 cuz although its 430..
its Antec's one of the best PSUs and is really really nice.

that surge protector is fine I guess. but I dont really see the need.

BFG and eVGA are both good...
BFG isnt better than eVGA and eVGA isnt better than BFG...
I'd get the BFG one instead.

I think you should lower your CPU to E6300, lose the fan and get a better GFX card like 7900GS for ~$170 cuz you dont need a HSF fan unless you are goin to OC full out.

for mild oc, Stock fans just fine

What will you be using this PC for again?

Good question. I should have posted this in the OP. Sorry.

I use the computer for internet, email, beta testing programs. Also I am a download junkie. Thru MS webcast program I should be receiving a free copy of Vista Business which I will be upgrading to Ultimate. I should also receive Office 2007. (Unless this goes the way of their free USB Drive program.)

I wanted to be sure that, whatever Build I do, Ultimate would run with Aero effects.

I am also into streaming videos, recording TV programs, editing same and such. The Grandkids are into games (not intensive) so this could in the future be passed on to them. I am not into games. I will not be overclocking.

I still have not been able to research your comments, been in bed with the flu. However in regard to the surge protector comment, where I live there has been enough lightning strikes that have shut my computer down the hard way that I feared that the next time something would get fried. So, at this point, this computer is protected by APC.

Just stick with the 600 WATT in case you decide to add more stuff. Seeing the things you want to do, you might want to buy a few hard drives. Get two hard drives and put them in RAID 1 for your downloads and data files. Then you can use the other two in one of two ways: use one hard drive for the OS and the other for another OS for dual boot if needed. Or RAID 0 or 1 the OS. Still not quite sure the point of RAID 0. I figured RAID 0 and RAID 1 would have the same performance, except with RAID 1, if one hard drive craps out, you still have the other. Also, APCs are very nice! That should be adequate. I have a 500WATT Power supply and it's enough to power my computer and monitor for about 5 minutes. But I have it set in the power management to go into hibernate after 1 minute of running on battery just to be safe.

The stock cooler is good if you don't do overclocking. If you just want your CPU cooler to stay cool, the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro is cheap and very adequate. I just got the Ninja because I wanted to do some heavy overclocking just to find out that my mobo's FSB wall is about 400 MHz exact :(

Also, perhaps try to go with eVGA on the graphics. They have that nice step up program

My friend had a BFG graphics card and it messed up on him, so he sent it back and got a refurbished one instead of a new one like they said. Just to find out that the refurbished one crapped out as well :(

Other than that, I think you're about set to go. :)

Good luck with the flu. The only reason I hate the winter. Otherwise, WINTER = CHEAP COMPUTER COOLING SOLUTION
