I just bought a 6800GS OC and installed it with the drivers on the CD. But when i go to play any of my games like World of Warcraft or Thief 3 (I don't own any graphics intensive games) my FPS haven't really improved at all. I know in WoW they haven't improved a bit.

I'm running a 2.5 P4 a gig of DDR

and i have a POWMAX 400watt PSU

here's a link for the info to the PSU...its all greek to me

http://www.gearxs.com/gearxs/produ [...] ts_id=2283

I upgraded to the Geforce 6800GS OC from a geforce 5200fx

Well, honestly, I don't know what to look for...

Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks

IMO, WoW tends to be more CPU sided and doesn't lay a big load on your 6800.

Benchmark both of them on something like SiSoft Sandra 06 or 3DMark05. Too bad you don't half HL2, Doom3 or something more GPU intensive to test on.

Make sure nView didn't take your 5200 settings and jump them up a notch. High Performance, Performance, Quality, High Quality as High Q.'s fps deterioration will be noticed easily.

try the latest drivers from the nvidia websight.

and your 400watt powmax powersupply is questionable.

ran 3dmark05 and ran the 3 little demo benchmarks and came up with this

DMark Score -4029 3DMarks
CPU Score -2552 CPUMarks

Don't know if that tells you anything

well for 3dmark05 a 68 series card or my two 68gt,s
score around 5000 and 6000 oced. and the 68gs is real close to the gt.

and a 68series card is leaps and bounds over an fx card.
so im not sure but i think its possiable that your psu is the problem?

I'd even say WOW is more limited by your internet connection and server lag than it is by your CPU...

Quite true. Im running WoW on an E6300 @ 2.8 ghz and a x1800xl. Most nights it runs smooth but on some nights (high load on server) it gets a bit choppy.

I was thinkin it would be alright since the 6800 only need a 300 or 350 watt PSU, i can't remember which. But, i have a friend who has his A+ certification and he said he thinks it might be underpowered, but i don't know. The weird part is that he built both our CPU's at around the same time we both have the same mobo, amount of RAM, processor, the only difference is the PSU, and internet connection, oh and now, the video card.
He's on cable and I'm just on DSL. I have a better video card and he gets WAY better FPS on WoW. So it might be true what you've said about WoW. Anyhow, any other suggestions or comments are appreciated.

Another question. Which in your all opinions is the best driver for the 6800gs. I've read that the 91.74 z-tweaked are the best but I'm unsure. I know the drivers won't make that big of a difference but i'm just curious.

Thanks

Your best bet is usually with the latest greatest.

yes its possiable do to the gpu not getting enough power.

have you heard of people getting better oc,s after a psu upgrade.
that is possiable too.

the cpu uses more power when oc,ed even with out a vlt bump.

You haven't heard much I suppose.

And on another note, if your intent was to troll, please learn to form full sentences, and use proper acronyms.

Thanks again to everyone with insightful input.

Sometimes drivers can make a huge impact, you may want to check yur card manufacturer for drivers. You never know..... I've heard tell of such things. Doesn't seem quite right to me but some say it happens.

Seems to me if the PS was underpowering anything you would have much larger issues (think small brown out inside yur case). I could be wrong though just haven't heard of a video card not getting decent FPS due to a PS...

One thing i would definately do is find a regestry wipe out kinda program somethin that will remove all instances of yur video drivers AND uninstall in Add/Remove programs... Then reinstall yur current drivers...

anyhow good luck

Yeah i use a driver/cab cleaner everytime I change driver. Tried manufacturers drivers already to no avail. My friend brought his card over and plugged it in, and still no improvement. So i think i'm gonna send it back and just upgrade mob and processor like i should have done in the first place...
