Hi,

Here is my current system
Case : Antec Sonata II with 450w psu
MSI Neo4-F s939
AMD Athlon 3200+
2 X 512 PC3200
7600 GT xxx edition XFX

I am very happy. I do not want to upgrade it now. I wanted to wait till the end of 2007, but I am starting to get a little worry about the possibility to find s939 processor at the end of 2007. In a first step, I would like to just upgrade the CPU. So, 2 questions :

If i want to change just the CPU, what would be the highest speed CPU I could run on this rig, considering that I keep the 450w psu ?

AMD said they will stop making s939 processor. Does it mean that there wont be any more on the market in 1 year ? Can I wait before buying one ? How much time do you think i've got before i have to make the upgrade ?

Go to:

http://extreme.outervision.com (Power supply calculator)

and add one Hard Disk, one optical drive, video card and CPU, use high end motherboard, calculate Watts and divide by 12 to get amps. Add 2-4 amps for safety.

Compare to your power supply 12v rails.
Combined should not exceed requirements.

Max power output on 12v rails: look at box, subtract 3.3v + 5v maximum output from total wattage of PSU and divide by 12 to get maximum amps on 12v rail. Should be higher than requirements. That's why we add 2-4 amps.

If you are happy with your system, and you can do everything you want, don't upgrade now. Although AMD will stop making the 939 chips, they will be available for a while. I'm pretty sure some places will still carry the chips by end of 2007. And the price should be lot lower.
