I just had a buddy ask me to check into wifi extenders. I'm pretty computer/network savvy, but have never looked into extending wifi signals.

I don't yet know what kind of wifi router/ap it is, but it's in a building on the west end of an airport. My buddy is in a hanger about 1500 ft away. Right now they tell me you pretty much have to be parked right in front of the building with the wifi to pick it up. We have complete access to the WAP device so we can add an antenna or whatever to it.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Here is a links on antennas and amps, it should help out. At an airport you are going to be in high noise area. The FCC controls what is in use on the pads and on air port grounds. You are going to need 2 beam antennas to connect to 2 bridges to tie 2 networks together. If a AP is only needed at one in you may get by with a repeter, not sure. Line amps are normally used when more the 9' of coax is used. 11b/g equipment only has milliwatts of power. The reason for short range and poor signal through walls. It was design that way on purpose, to mimize interference with other units close by.

Thanks Blue,

I'll check the link out. I know there won't be too much worry about interference, it's an uncontrolled airport, no control tower. All radio communications are done as a courtesy to other pilots and our airport uses 122.9MHz so it seems like it won't conflict with the 2.4GHz too bad.

We want to have hangars "along the way" able to pick the signal up as well, so your 2nd suggestion seems like the one I want to investigate. i.e. Amplifying and broadcasting the signal.

Thanks again!

Wow, there's a ton of stuff there. So, do you think it's doable to put a broadcast antenna with a signal amplifier on it? How many watts would be realistic to get a decent signal 1500ft away?
