THG over clocked a P4 past 5ghz

These are 2 totally different processors. The Pentiums could clock better due to the longer pipeline. A Pentium can go past 7 Ghz.

just pointing out and Intel at 5ghz is nothing special anymore... considering that the P4's were able to go past 5ghz one would assume the Core2 could too, especially since its a modified P3 core at heart, with all the new modern technologies and enhancements put under the hood, too me atleast its no biggie, seeing 6ghz-7ghz would be something on Core 2

8)

I would be more interested at this point in seeing what a 65 nm K8 would do under phase, dry ice, and LN2 --- my guess -- cold bug every time :)

The assumption that Core 2 will hit clocks as high as a P4 is not quite correct. P4 has 31 stages (a very deep pipeline), Core 2 is 14 stages, so it should not clock as high as well as P4 --- of course IPC between the two is night and day.

Overclocking the core 2 duo is a little harder than the P4 and takes a little skill to hit those high GHz.
with 14 stages that explains why its harder to stabilize 4Ghz.
the thing I like the best about the Core 2 is the performace gains across the board overclocking even at moderate oc's .
theres no comparison over the P4.

These are 2 totally different processors. The Pentiums could clock better due to the longer pipeline. A Pentium can go past 7 Ghz.Although Tomshardware overclocked a Pentium 4 Northwood C to 5GHz which was quite an accomplishment considering it was built on a 130nm process and had a shorter 20 stage pipeline.

As to the thread, this is old news as coolaler overclocked to a little over 5.5GHz.
