Who thinks that making Macs Windows compatible is an admitted defeat for Mac OS. I think Apple really is losing it's identity and will eventually turn into a Dell, Gateway etc. . .
Afterall, Apple's key advertising is based around the fact that they can run Windows and Office too.
The other part of it's advertising is based around the myth that creative things can't be done efficiently on a PC, which is not true.
And also on the fact that Macs don't get viruses, but now they do: they run Windows.
And also the fact that PC's crash a lot, but now so do Macs: they run Windows. (Although I have had OS crash on me on multiple systems, during heavy creative applications and some not so heavy. Ate three of my movies!!!!)
So what is a Mac anymore, but an expensive, pretty, all-in-one, proprietary PC? Everything I hate in a computer!
what a helpful post.... have you used a mac for an extended period of time? or jsut sat down and didnt understand it so gave up and said they suck? i have used windows my entire life but recently had access to a mac book pro for the last month few months, seriously they are much better, yes the windows partition can get viruses and such but then you just format that partition nothing happens to your mac stuff, yes it crashes in windows but not while in osx. seriously doing any graphic design is so much faster because you dont have random crap happening, you dont to spend time fixing problems, you just do your work and are done. creating somethin in photoshop on a mac is much easier and quicker than on a pc. you are all just windows fanboys who have never actually tried using mac.
BS!!!! Like I said I had to use eight Macs purchased against my better judgement, and I lost hours of editting time twice in a one week time span because OS Crapped out. My PC has never lost data like those macs do. You live in a dream world, perpetuating a myth.

Im not sure this really means all that much. Unix/Linux are also moving to be more compatible with windows. In return Windows 2003 also has many extensions to it that make it more compatible with Macs/Linux/Unix machines as well. Office is now opening up to make it more compatible with other platforms. Whether its defeat or not, it is good for the IT industry for these OS's and software to start playing nice with each other.
Macs do get viruses btw, just check Talisker Security and that will become apparent. And it has nothing to do with it now being able to run Windows.
Why start a thread about MACs in a PC Harware Forum? If Apple decides to make MAC parts open to manufactures and enthusiest to be able to build there own systems then post a thread about that. Till then MACs need no mention in a PC Hardware Forum.
It just bug the crap out of me that Apple trash talks PC hardware 24/7 and claims to be superior. They are not. Neither is the hardware, which I wouldn't use even if it was available.
My point is that they are becoming another PC and eventually I see their uniqueness dissapearing.
Just wanted to know what the opinions were out there FROM PC GUYS. Could care less about the brainwashed Mac worshippers.
it's second hand, i mooch off friends who buy new computers ever other year... i'm not that crazy about spending a grand on something that will be out dated in a year (which is why i'll never buy a new mac).
In my opinion, once Mac went with Intel, all they are is an overpriced PC with a propitiatory OS. If I wanted to run Windows and Office, I won't spend the money on an Apple: a machine I can't upgrade or fix myself.
macs aren't made for gaming... and you'd be an idiot to buy one for gaming. Macs are for people who want something that works without knowing how or what makes it work (and that's why macs don't belong on Tom's forums).
Macs, like every other pc manufacturer (Dell, Compaq, HP, Alienware....), targets a specific group. When Mac ads attack PC owners who are they really attacking? Dell, Compaq, custom builders, or even do-it-yourselfers. The majority of the world OSs are windows based. Mac is the underdog, and what do underdogs do, but attack everyone else regardless of who they got their PC from.
Desperation or great marketing scheme, it doesn't really matter. Apple will continue to sell computers as long as it serves their target group. Because everyone likes to use their computers for different things, and will purchase the one of their choice based on which one they FEEL suits them the best.

I get a kick ot of the latest Mac commercials on TV. They show a guy as a PC, beat up and tired because he's being used for everything under the sun by the whole family; husband, wife, kids. Then they have a guy all clean and spiffy as the Mac, not used for much of anything, and they try to say the Mac is better.
What's that? I'd rather have a computer that can do everything and be used by the entire family than one that can only do something simple and is not used by anyone. I think whoever made this commercial unwittingly showed PC's as better than Macs any day of the week.
lol agreed, I have sat down and used many macs, many of my friends have owned macs and there are one or 2 that still do, but once they realize how to properly use windows then they realize what crap OSX really is!
Negative ghostrider the pattern is full, I am well aware of the big L and how to use it, though I havent in a while, but if you use windows properly...or any OS for that matter then you arent going to have problems. The number one source of problems on PC's or any computer for that matter is lack of ability to use it. We get just as many macs in our shop as we do PC's of any brand, except we are unable to fix them and the people that come in do not do any sort of editing for thier work or any other use, and just fell into the false advertising of mac and bought the machines and now they have to ship them on back to get them to fix their problems for them because even though macs dont give you error messages they still do have problems and still get errors and virus' as well. They just do not tell you and then there is a large build up of crap that does not need to be their and results in a final problem/crash that is very unexpected and who are the only people that can fix it?!? oh thats right...mac! lol what a waste!
Macs will survive, not because of their technology, but because of their name. Macs, like BMWs, carry a certain level of snob appeal, and some folks are willing to pay to be part of that club.

yes, but thats only because of their marketing. once their marketing machine fades away, macs will die out again. stupid iPods and stupid ibooks and imacs and stupid arghghghh die mac!!
I guess to each their own. The mac users I know are pretty die-hard about it so there must be something to it. I've only briefly used one and it was pretty much windows with different preferences (I like start menu, they like the bottom float bar, I like windows alt-tab/cntr-tab, they like their window picker, I like C:\, they like / & mounting drives...). My buds have become very efficient at using their macs and I have become very efficient in windows. So I will keep using windows & they will keep using macs. No problem (except for those damn commercials that seem like political smear campaigns). No fanboyisms please; you want real security, see OpenBSD - mac is can be invaded like windows and would be if they had the market share to make hackers care, you want a nice everyday computing experience - try a mac & pc for a bit and pick the interface that suits you.
the bottom line though, is that macs are just in a completely different price range than PCs. the cheapest mac is a little mac mini and thats $500. and no dvd burner. the premium that apple charges for mac users will never attract many consumers. and of course, that all the hardware is proprietary, so no upgrading, fixing, or changing of anything.
granted, i know a lot of people prefer macs for video and picture editing. but if your not in that category, i dont see the point.
right now, apple is riding the wave of die hard liberal adolescents. and adolescents now includes about 12- 35 year olds. and the connection between the commercials and politics by another poster is accurate. dont get me wrong, im no right-winger, but i despise ipod wearing tight jeans with holes people as the next guy
Mac systems before Mac OS X could indeed be pretty unstable; I'm much more confident in a Unix-based OS.
Mac interfaces are also a bit more intuitive than Windows's and slightly more homogeneous (press 'Start' to shut down your computer...)
Indeed, for any form of graphics work they do the trick very nicely: Macs have stringent interface rules, and one does spend less time figuring out a new piece of software than they do on Windows.
Security-wise, while it's true that there are less Mac virii, the more modular approach and better implemented user rights (inherited from the KDE/BSD/Mach base) usually mean that virii have less of an effect and that vulnerabilities don't contaminate other pieces of software as much as they do under Windows (the Outlook Express that crashed IE7 24 hours after IE7 came out still makes me smirk).
Their price premiums though is VERY hard to swallow, however OS upgrades cost less than new Windows versions ($99 for a single computer, $199 for 2 to 5... and they are not crippled like 'home' versions of WinXP/Vista are) without need to buy new hardware (better code efficiency?).

LOL, what world do you live in? Don't get me started on Mac mice, especially the new one with the miniature scroll ball that makes me feel that I have a tumor or wart on the tip of my finger when I use it - first mouse I've used in a long that that was painful to use (the last one being an old 486 Pac Bell system with the squarish mouse).

This is why I get angry and I'm glad to see someone else thinks like me. Also, glad to see this thread still alive.

I think the only reason Video editors prefer Mac is that they are being brainwashed by that same community in universities and Hollywood. It's a myth being perpetuated by people who really haven't use Windows.
I say it again, I've use both and only the Mac crapped out on me (using OS) and it wasn't even something big. Two of them actually, and one is lying broken on a storage closet floor, because you have to take them to a Mac place to fix them.
The Government payed a lot of money for that big useless hunk of plastic.

I think that this is based on what you are use to. I can figure out Windows based software very well. Plenty intuitive for me.
My first computer was a Mac. I loved it. It lasted for close to 3 years before I had to "upgrade. I went with a self built PC, only because I wanted to game with my friends. Had one hell of a time trying to figure out Windows, but it sunk in with time. As Mac's OS would if people gave it the time of day. At this point my PC has OSX loaded on a partition and I can dual boot into either windows or OSX. I find myself using both equally. It makes me laugh when I see the whole "Mac vs PC" debate. People who have never touched a Mac shoot it down and vice versa for the PC's.
Honestly, what the fuck do you think you're doing?
It's the dumbest thread I've read in an age - and frankly, who gives a shit what you think? Macs have a legitimate market, and it seems incredibly unlikely their market share will drop any time soon - in fact, I'm willing to bet that they increase market share in the next 24 months.
Disclaimer: I own 6 PCs, 4 laptops, and a Mac Powerbook.
I think I read somewhere their Comp business has gained like 3% of the market for a total of 6%. Their campaign is working. Hell, in January I'm going to get a Mac Book Pro. (Mainly cause ITS SHINY AND PROPRIETARY!).. excuse me folks I am becoming a pariah in front of your eyes.
To be honest I've seen every threat about a Mac in this forum start off like this.
1st Post, Possible honest/decent question about a Mac.
2nd Post, KILL HIM WE HATE MAC I DRINK BLOOD OF SATAN.. or something else.
3rd Post, You are 2 noob to understand MAC SkIlLz.
4th Post, Mac's do stuff! We like Macs! They just aren't for everyone! (like Linux!)
5th Post, WHY DO WE ALWAYS HAVE A FLAME WAR ABOUT MAC IN A PC HARDWARE FORUM.
You can usually rinse and repeat and rearrange/duplicate this for about...I think the last one spanned over 10 pages of pure flammage.
The only Neat thing is that that 1st post... would be slammed in anyone's forum.. and for that I am somewhat happy about.
I think the mac has a great future. I have been a PC user for years. I have been through so many editing systems that were complete garbage. Avid was a solid program but you had to have a Bachelor of Avid to run it. Final Cut Pro came along and blew everything else out of the water...at half the price. You could just sit down and edit...without a manual. Very intuitive. Creating a DVD was a sure thing. In most PC DVD creation programs you crossed your fingers and hoped that the DVD recorder would be recognized and that it would like the media you put into it. iDVD was drag, drop, and burn...with nice templates as a bonus.
The comment about the commercial where the PC is actually being used for creative stuff. Actually...what the mac people were saying in that commercial is that PC's hate doing creative stuff. That is why he looked so tired and worn out. He is used to doing "spreadsheets and word documents".
Macs are created for creativity sake. You buy it. It usually is powerful enough to do the work. You can't upgrade it...but who wants to tear apart a system and rebuild it when you can just put the whole system up on Ebay and actually get some money for it. Macs keep their value for that reason. Sure they start out expensive but they hold value. That is why buying a used mac isn't such a bad proposition...especially if it has the applecare warranty which is fully transferable.
I am still a PC user. I am also a mac user. I know both systems and if I need something specific done I pick the best system. If I want to do animation or play Battlefield 2 I use a PC. If I want to edit video...I use a mac.
As for the future of the mac? Read the above paragraph. Mac has now given people like me an all in one solution. Why do you think they might have done that? Maybe because they wanted to sell more hardware...or at least give people like me the option to run both operating systems without having to have a room full of computer gear. One machine...two operating systems. I still haven't made the decision to jump to the mac platform and rely on a dual boot system...but as time progresses and hardware gets so cheap that even a mac is affordable...along with the seamless integration of Bootcamp...a mac would seem to be the way to go.
One last thing. There must be a reason why mac is gaining market share. It might be because people are tired of having to choose between 7 different versions of Windows when Vista comes out. Mac...one OS...no matter what machine you choose to use.
And for all the mac snobs out there...anyone can own a mac. All you have to do is reach into your back pocket and get out your credit card. It isn't an elitist thing...something that makes you of higher intelligence just because you can use a mac and get things done on it.
As for the PC users...some people like to hot rod. Overclock. Get the most bang for thier buck and endure the hardships of drivers and making every single piece of the puzzle work. When you do figure it out...it feels good. Don't hate mac users just because they don't want to take apart stuff to get it to work.
Use what works for you. Don't hate others because they made a choice you didn't. Don't make a choice that you think will make you elite. It won't.
I use a PC and a MacBook Pro, and apple's OS is very solid. Within 5 years, when compatibility issues subside and web 2.0+ takes care of the rest, I think Microsoft & PC's market share will only be eaten away further. For the majority of business applications, Mac meets most people's needs and without the hassle us geeks take for granted knowing how to overcome. Plus, the hardware and GUI are very sexy. Apple has become a status symbol, which is hard to find in the PC arena.
I"ve used macs from the 1st as well as PC's. I have used them professionally in printing/graphics where MACs really shine and PCs really suck. HOWEVER, at home I use and build PC's so I can play cool games and where MACs suck. Draw your own conclusions.
I don't agree: Windows softwares change design and shortcuts from one app to the other quite drastically, even amongst products from the same editor (try your Office 2000 shortcuts with Office 2005, cry; try Win98 hotkeys with Vista, run for cover), and I won't even mention shortcuts for a software coming from different editors - the only constant ones are those MS got from Apple (Ctrl+C/X/V).
On a Mac, interface is basically: one hand on keyboard, one on mouse (with a single button), and switch actions depending on keys pressed.
Good luck finding equivalent stuff on Windows.
I haven't used a Mac in a while actually, and when I did I was still pretty much a Windows power user; I found Windows interface clunky and odd afterwards.
Now under Linux, I've gotten used to the power of the CLI (nothing better when one requires to start an app, a batch job and a sound player without leaving his main window from sight).
