I have an XP 3200/400 and a gig of ram. I would like to watch some HD video down the road, but based on my CPU that isn't happening. However I read that if the GPU can take the load off then it becomes much easier for a slower CPU to be able to run HD video. I currently have a Radeon 9550/128/128 and look to be going to an X1950Pro 512. So the question is will this allow me to run HD? I doubt it would pull 1080p, but anything above 720p is fine. If it I can't run HD video, would it serve me to cut my costs and get a 7600GS for $140? I don't play many games, but the 9550 just isn't cutting it. So I am going to upgrade, the question is to what.
Actually a XP 3200 will probably do the job. Of course, an h.264 accelerated video card would certainly help.
before giving up, why not try to play a 1080p clip? Here's a link to a 1080p and 720p movie trailer. If you give it a few seconds to load I bet it'll work!
720p does so-so. I can watch it but it stutters every so often, and I have to have quicktime as the only program running. I have tried a 1080p video a few times and it's so choppy it's not even remotely watchable.
