Is there any way to get the drivers for a new disk controller loaded into a Windows XP system in place i.e. without re-installing Windows? This question applies to any system where one disk controller e.g. SATA or RAID or ATA133 non-RAID is to replace an existing controller. The problem is that the drivers can only be installed with the new controller in place but the OS will not boot until the driver is installed. It is possible to boot the system in question from another IDE (caddy) drive and so gain access to the registry of the RAID system disks.

This seems to be a major weakness in the Windows installation package and so maybe has created a utility or workaround. :D

Thanks

The article is a very useful guide but doesn't solve my problem. The old and new controllers cannot co-exist in the same system and I have no intermediate controller to perform the two pass solution. Buying a third controller would defeat the purpose of purchasing an upgrade as opposed to a new system.

So what I'm looking for is a way to transfer the device driver for the new controller booting from another hard disk with the RAID drives attached and accessible. I have made a basic install of XP to the RAID drives and stored it in a backup file then restored the full system and put back the original controller. So I now have two registries available to patch across the device driver. However there seems to be loads of places in the registry that need changed.

Is there any procedure to do this or a tool that can help?

Thanks

I don't know if this will help but I have run windows setup and seleted F6 to install raid drivers and then repaired windows before. It worked for me the one time I tried it.

Thanks for the suggestion but I already tried that and after performing the Windows Repair the PC goes into a reboot loop. So The new driver and RAID card works from the Windows XP Install DVD and installs the files necessary to start the repair but on reboot is unable to access the RAID drives. I tried it a couple of times with the same result. Don't remember the exact error - possibly no bootable device. So I'm still looking for a way to 'patch' in the new RAID controller device driver. As I mentioned I have a working system with the old controller, and a Drive Image backup of a basic Windows XP install with the new controller working. So if there was a tool to transfer the device driver that would be ideal, or even a registry scanner tool which could compare the two registries that might help.
