Any install requiring the reading of an MSI file FAILS. I have the latest
release of MS installer. I'm running win 200 professinal on a HP PC. Other
installs work fine. This is very frustrating because I want to install
partition magic 8.0 but the install uses an MSI file. Any help would be
greatly appreciated. Telguy99.

What is the error code the Windows Installer produces?

I know this may sound like a sill question, but do you have sufficient
rights to install applications?

You say you have the latest version of the MSI, but that is version 3 not 2.
Here is a link to version 3 (1.91 MB):

However, you may not be able to install it

I'm signed on as administrator so I have install rights. I downloaded and
installed version 3 of MSI...Still can't install programs requiring an MSI
file. Any other suggestions? telguy99

Are you aware the Windows Installer 3.1 came out yesterday?

Article number: KB893803

Download Page:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=889482fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&DisplayLang=en

Redistributable (direct link (2.46 MB)):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/info.aspx?na=46&p=3&SrcDisplayLang=en&SrcCategoryId=&SrcFamilyId=889482fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&genscs=0&u=http%3a%2f%2fdownload.microsoft.com%2fdownload%2f1%2f4%2f7%2f147ded26-931c-4daf-9095-ec7baf996f46%2fWindowsInstaller-KB893803-x86.exe

Here's a utility by Microsoft to clean up failed installations of the
Windows Installer (page):

Direct lint to utility (be careful using it):

I think the problem you are having is with the registry keys. There are
plenty of references about the MSI, but they all have error codes with them.
Whereas, you say you don't have any error code, so, maybe you should contact
Microsoft about it.

You said that you are logged in as the administrator when installing
programs so, it cannot be anything to do with access denied & because it
happens on all programs then it cannot be that the path doesn't exist.
Therefore, no error message is thrown, so, in my opinion, something isn't
registered properly, but reinstalling won't rectify this problem.
Installation problems of the MSI used to happen on Windows 98 quite
regularly, but I have never heard about it on Windows 2000.

What programs are listed under the Add/Remove Program list in Control Panel?
If nothing then you need to open registry editor, type 'regedit' without
quotes & navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

If there are more listed under this registry key than the Add/Remove
Programs list then you need to delete the registry key for the program ONE
BEFORE the last one listed in the Add/Remove Programs list. That will then
show all the listed programs then.

Let me know how you get on
