Hi all,

I have tried to explore Linux (via the "Kubuntu" distribution) on the PC in my bedroom. This post is coming from my Windows XP computer downstairs. What I'd like to do is be able to send files to and from the Linux computer and if possible and without too much trouble, get internet access on the Linux computer as well as this one (sharing the same line).

How would I go about doing this? Any help would be appreciated. Sorry if this is the wrong forum!!

Thanks again,
Chris

Router are not OS dependent. So any router will work, just need drivers for your nic card.

Sorry, but what's a nic card? Is there anything specific I have to look for in a router?

nic is your network interface card. It uses a CAT5 cable with RJ45 connectors (over sized, 8 cond, phone like).

Right, that's the one that's a standard phone line and there's two of them on the back, right? So do I just run a standard phone cable between the two to connect and transfer files without the internet?

It DOES NOT USE PHONE CABLES. (RJ11, 4 cond)

It requires a Cat 3 or 5 cable. RJ45 connection, 8 cond.

If you want to tranfer files between 2 pc with out a hub/switch or router you need a CROSSOVER cable. Then you have to use a static IP, set each computer to the same sub net. Then shoud be good to go. Once file share is turned on. And the Firewall is set to allow local subnets to talk.

I do not know what motherboard you have, But some do have 2 nic ports. Just need to look at you port connections and see how may are listed as "Local area connection"
