New to the forums but I thought i'd better ask if anyone else is having issues with crossfire X1950XTX's. I can enable crossfire and it runs great on 3D Mark 06, but when i play games if i have the catalyst AI enabled (standard OR advanced mode) the game will crash and the pc will fail to respond completely - I have to do a hard reset to get the machine responding again. The crashing happens as soon as the gpu's have to render any graphics at all, and the fans on the 1950's speed up to max speed.
I have had this issue with 6.10, 6.11 and 6.12 catalysts and m not very happy about it as with the ai disabled the 3d mark 06 mark is lower, and so i feel that due to the ai i am missing out on better framerates on my games.
Note this does not effect all the games i have, but some - star wars galaxies has issues, as well as star wars empire at war, battle for middle earth 2 and a couple other games, but X3- reunion plays fine with the AI enabled.
Cat AI is an algorythm that ID's certain instances of filtering and rendering, and can optimize to run more efficient in certain apps.
Problem is, that AI has generic situations, where it runs code on a game that wasn't intended for it - in such a scenario it's 50/50 on whether it's going to work or not. 3dmark is obviously something ATi would want to optimize to run great - it gives good scores and sells products. Games however isn't supported right through the board, and you'll get some to work and some not - unfortunately...
With that being said, if you can't gauge the performance of a game using AI due to crashing, it's hard to draw the conclusion on whether it will enhance said game. I for one, never use AI, as it can lead to texture problems in game (flickering/odd colour) - if the game is running smoothly, I'm happy - but that's me 8)
