I am considering overclocking my new Sapphire X1900GT soon. I decided to see what temps its running at now to compare to oc'd temps so I downloaded ATI tool and ran a scan for artifacts, whithin 2 minutes the GPU temp rose to 76. I got worried that this was too hot and aborted the scan. I am wondering if this is normal and what acceptable temps are. thanks!

Also, this may be due to the fact that my rear exhaust case fan is not functioning properly at the moment (I'm going to get a new one tomorrow)

The x19x0 series run hot, my 1900gt (HIS ICEQ3) is at 50-55c load (ati tool artifact scan) though the fan runs at around 91%, so ati tool states.

Is your gpu fan running? Also what is your overclock if you have overclocked it?

I've overclocked my 1900gt to 640 mhz core, 1600mhz mem, at 60c load after 2 mins ati tool scan, though it's weird at the moment that the fan is only at 50%... :)

hmmm, i just noticed that under fan control it has the current settings.

Above Fan speed
0C 41%
70C 45%
74C 50%
77C 64%
81C 77%
85C 82%
90C 95%
95C 30%

Do I have to check the "Override fan speeds" box in order for it to use these values? If this is the case, what is currently controlling the fan speed/temp ratio?

I just set the Fan to 100% and ran the Artifact scan it started at like 65C around 1 minute and is slowly increasing. It went to 66C around 2 minutes 67 around 3 68 around 4 and 69 around 5. at 6 minutes it just increased to 70C. This all seems too hot for running at 100% fan speed.

What is the max safe operating temp?

yeah if you check the override box, atitool controls the fan speed, not the catalyst driver or hardware.

Those temps donm't look too good, you're using the stock cooler right, the one that takes up one slot, yeah? (the one slot cooler isn't all that good) If so you should probably get an aftermarket heatsink fan for it or get a 80mm/120mm fan blowing air to it before overclocking.. :)

hmmm well i just ran it again and at fan speed of 68% i was sitting at about 66C after half an hour, this seems very acceptable to me. What is a good load temp to be at? my idle is somewhere around 45C i think.

btw i think that the now lower temps have something to do with that i just installed my Freezer Cooling 7 Pro and got my 120mm exhaust fan working.

so with 66C at load with fanspeed of 68% do you think that I will be able to OC at all?

Yeah probably, just have a go really. Um try upping the memory as this should make a difference, do it little by little, not in big steps, running the artifcat scan every 5~10mhz for around 5mins. When you start to get artifacts then start lowering the overclock.
You could change the Vmem and VGPU but I wouldn't reccomend it at the temps you got if you think what you got are fairly good andf you don't want a space heater

After getting the highest stable overclock you can from the memory note down all apporopriate factors to the overclock that you may have changed on a peice of paper.

After this you can then start overclocking the GPU core, lower the memory overclock to the default speed and everything else you changed, then do the same for the GPU core to OC it, little by little.

Having done all this you can then set the memory and core to their highest stable speeds, remembering to put all the factors which contributed toi the overclock in place.

And there you have it! :D

Heres the 1900gt I have (below)

it seems quite hot already but I would say to try and keep the temperature below 75c, even then it's quite hot...

the memory shoudld be the easiest to overclock, I've currently got mine up to 801mhz (1602mhz DDR).

The memory was overclocking successfully and ran stably at a frequency even higher than the nominal. The resultant operating speed of the video memory on overclocking amounted to 1550 MHz DDR, which is quite a good result as compared to the nominal 1200 MHz.

The website says the stock cooler is inadequate for overclocking, also they said their 1900gt 's GPU core could not reach 650, 625 or 600mhz,.... , mines at 640mhz

yeah when i overclocked just my memory i was at like 71C and got my mem to 846, when i OC'ed both i was at 553/720 and neither one of these really affected my 3dMark scores... my 01 score went from 38500 to 39100 and my 06 score went from 4900 to 5100. So since the gain was so minimal i just set it back to default. When I OC'ed my CPU (E6400 from 2.13 to 3.2) I got a huge gain, from 30000 in 01 to 38000 and from 4500 to almost 5000 in 06.

GPUs tend to run much hotter than CPUs, especially the ATi x1900 and nVidia 8800s, which have large dies.

The fact that the card doesn't go to 95% fan speed until it hits 90°C indicates to me that you'll be ok if you keep it under 85°C or so.

Hell, at stock speeds on the fan and GPU my 8800GTX hits about 82°C at load if I remember correctly.

yeah i aslo have an x1900gt, and it runs at 58c idle 75-80c on load, i have it over clocked to 550core-830mem(yeah got one of the slower ones by accident), i got a 90mm fan next to the graphics card to pull the hot air away from it but it still runs really hot. i heard that x1900 just runs hot and that we shouldn't have anthing to worry about, but i would recomend getting a after market cooler which i plan on doing

I've got the HIS 1900GT, as I said earlier, and it's either that I got a good card or that the cooler is good.

My 1900GT, with the HIS' 'special' ICEQ3 cooler HIS put on it:

http://www.hisdigital.com/html/iceq3.html

In one of the pictures I posted you can see that I ran ATItool for 50 minutes or so and it was only around 50c (GPU); and that's at 640mhz core, 1600mhz mem  As you can see from one of the pics I have one 120mm intake fan at the front and a small 80mm fan feeding the air to the graphics fan. Rubbish cable management  need to sort that out sometime...

I would say it's becasue of the cooler, yeah I'd suggest getting an aftermaket cooler, remember to get one that cools the voltage regulators (thy get hot too) and memory modules. :D

hehe yeah :D, I think i've achieved some fairly good clocks on it ...

...Now all I need to do is unlock those damn pipelines

haha
