I am trying to install Windows 2000 Professional on an older PC. It is an
Intel Celeron 400MHz with 196M of RAM. The motherboard is a Giga-Byte
GA-6VXE+.

The installation works OK, but as soon as I install SP4, the computer only
boots as far as the login screen and then reboots.

I have changed the memory, processor etc, but I believe that it is an issue
specific to this motherboard. The BIOS of this board has been updated. I
cannot find any specific information regarding this problem. This is the 4th
PC that I have that is battling with the same problem. The others were
dumped. Unfortunately I need this PC to work ASAP.

Help please!

I had this once with SP4 on a re install, using a machine that has had no
problems before and I believe it may have been caused
by a bad file copy during SP4 install, I had to reinstall again and it
worked ok the second time.

Try creating a new install disk by slipstreaming SP4:

Have reinstalled this and other machines several times, and used different
copies of SP4.
I believe that the problem may lie with ACPI support. I found some articles
that suggest using the F4 BIOS version and not the current F9.

The problem is where to find a 5 year old BIOS version!

It seems that I am not the only person to have run into this problem. I have
not found a clear solution yet.

Could it be that your Celeron is so old that it cannot install XP SP4? A lot
has changed in five years.
