Building a new system and its been a while. My question is reference to cable and jumper setting. I will be connecting a single hard drive to the SATA connection. I am thinking since there is no other PATA device installed I should I set the PATA optical drive to master and connect it to the primary IDE connector on the motherboard. Is this correct or should it on the secondary connector

Either or. As long as the optical is master on A channel, you shouldn't have any problems. (You could set it up with CS on the end of the cable also ofcourse.) AFAIK there isn't any difference performance wise between primary or secondary, so use whichever one you want.
