i have two 7950gt in sli but when i play cs 1.6, i'm getting about 60 fps and when i play cs:s i only get about 50 fps. all the settings are at 1280x1024 w/ vsync off and other stuff set at medium (2x,4x etc)

here's my system
msi k9n sli platinum
amd 64 x2 4200+
2 gig of corsair valueram memory at 533
sata hd
two bfg 7950gt oc
ultra vseries 500w ps

my computer is running windows x64 professional and i've installed the latest drivers. i read for reviews of the gpus that i can expect around 100fps for hl2 and my friend has a 7900gs and runs cs 1.6 at 200fps constant no problem.

can anyone suggest what i should do to get some smoother running of games?

i should also add that i had practically the same fps from when i had a 7600gs sli instead of the 7950gt's

btw, nvidia shows the temperatrues

cpu: 37c
system: 32c
nforce: 161
gpu1: 52
gpu2: 47

i don't know if it is the nforce over heating? but i did buy a thermaltake extreme spirit ii chipset cooler

well, i turn everything off and hdr was on.

i've also got ditched the msi mobo and got the dfi Lanparty UT NF590 which has the 590 sli chipset and reinstalled windows x64 again. and still the same problem.

is what i'm experiencing normal or it's just me

and would a new power supply fix the problem?

listen dude...turn v-sinc OFF. put all of the options to MAX.

if your frames are still low, go to:
nvidia control panel > 3D settings > set muli-gpu configuration > multi display mode > apply > OK

if your frames dont go any higher then it's just a cap on your framerates.

i've set the caps really high, i've turned vsync off and messed with the other settings but i'm still getting really low fps, i sometimes get like 10x fps in cs: source but then it goes down to about 30-40 when i turn around to shoot somebody.

you set the caps to max? and how exactly did you do that? and how are you getting your fps?

well,i typed fps_max 200 in the console to set the fps cap to 200, then i typed cl_showfps 1 to make it show the fps. but even if i didn't do that, cs1.6 is really choppy when i skined it and cs:source is really choppy when i'm in a gun fight.

:?: So it only slowed down after your installed a 3rd party addon (skins) ?

:?: Or was it giving the EXACT same problem beforehand ?

do this, go to nvidia control panel, go to 3D settings

instead of start view put Advanced View, then u go to Manage 3d settings, then click Vert syn, Force Off and apply.

1.6 will only put out 101 fps so fps_max 200 will do nothing.

put these commands in the Promp

cl_cmrate 101

cl_updaterate 101

rate 25000

fps_max 101

i also suggest downloading driver cleaner pro, go into safe mode clean the nvida drivers with the program and re-install the driver

ok, i did all the commands and still the same thing. i've also tried each card indiviually and still the same fps. i'm hoping it's just b/c of my bittorrented os. i'm gonna dl a trial version of windows x64 from microsoft and just reinstall my whole computer (i've done it like 4 times since i got the cards :!: )

does the low fps in games happen to everyone who get those cards or is it just me.

:?: If you load Task Manager, and check the Processes tab, is there a * mark next to the HL2.exe or Counter-Strike: Source process(es) ?
Of course you will need to do this right as the game loads, or [Alt+Tab] out of it from the main menu.

:?: What result do you get from the 'Video Stress Test' ?, and with what settings ?
Please screenshot all three screens, 2 video config and 1 for actual frame rate.

ok, i'm still having the problem so i deleted all the partitions on the hd (200gb total) and formated it through the windows install thing, and this time i used regular windows xp (the trial version of x64 didnt work either). reinstalled the newest drivers and everything.

still having the same problem, put the commands in cs, but my fps still lingers around 60fps (that is right after i reinstalled the os, put the drivers on, and installed cs, no skins nor other programs at all). all the games are run at 1280x1024.

i've taken off one of the 7950gt and is just using one of them at the moment, and i'm getting exactly the same thing as i was getting from when i had one 7600gs, 7600gs sli, and 7950gt sli as far as my eyes can tell (around 60ish fps, 40ish when skins applied, and actually lower performance in hl2, i was getting about 70fps constant w/ 7600gs sli and it drops to 40fps sometimes when i had the 7950gt in sli)

also during cs 1.6, i can actually hear the fans turning off, i don't know if that's related...

to tabrisdarkpeace: it slows down after i installed the skin, it was slow before (60ish) but even slower after the skins were applied (40ish). for the video stress test, it showed i had an average of 102 with vsync off, hdr on, antialias at x2, antiotropic at x4, details are all at high and water reflets world, despite the stress test, i'm still getting very choppy when i'm actually in a gun fight in cs:source, in cs 1.6, it's just the same thing no matter what(unless i get skins on). and since i have regular xp now, do u still need me to take screen shots?

thanx in advance

Take some screen shots of in game action with:

cl_showfps 2
fps_max 300
net_graph 1,2 and 3

and any other settings of use.

The screenshots will reveal what is actually going on when it is slow.

What drivers have you installed ?
- List all of them

:?: Oh, and what sound card do you have ?

you say you can hear the VIDEO CARD FANS TURNING OFF? what are your video card temps at? if the video card runs too hot, it automatically starts down clocking itself to keep from getting even hotter and frying.

Have u tried AMD Duel core optermiser, seeing as u have the same results in ur various graphics builds. Or maybe it would be better to detail only 1 core the run these games, i dont beleive these games were built with duel core in mind.

I wouldn't mind knowing what type of monitor u have too as mine is LCD and runs at 60Hz = 60fps, if i pull any more frames then that out of a card its pretty much useless to me

To be Honest u are just needlessly stressing ur monitor/GFX card if u need more then that to play a First Person Shooter IMHO

i defy anyone to tell the difference between 60 fps and 160 fps with out a frame rate counter

i have installed the newest cpu driver and optimizer from amd, i got a dell 19 inch lcd and it's running at 60hz.

the video card fan is turning off maybe cuz the game isn't using the gpu's processing power? the temperature is usually around 46 and never went above 52, right now i just started the comp and the fans is off on the graphics card, and when i start cs i can hear it come on.

i've only installed the latest driver from nvida by going to their website and installing that, the version for the install file says 93.71.

sethanis, human eye can only detect about 32 fps, but there is a difference between 60 and 160, 60 u can play and think, man i gotta plant this bomb. but when u have 160, u think screw all the other ppl, i'm getting 160fps on my system and u will feel all warm inside.

what's an adware free site where i cn upload the screen shots?

alright, i got a new power supply, the ocz gamexstream 850w, but the performance is still the same thing. this is taking so much time and very frustrating. i think i'm just gonna give up and sell the 7950gt and go back to the 7600gs, save up some money and get the 8800. thanks for all the help guys.
