Webcam fps concern

I have a Logitech QuickCam Web and when I record a video I can't highten the
fps (frames per second/frame rate) quality. If I use QuickCam 6.0.1
(software that came with it), and I go to "Change Video Capture settings"
and select "Record at Maximum frame rate" it will SAY the video is at 15
fps. If I enter 29 or 30 in the "Record at a specific frame rate" box it
will record as well, but in both cases when I play back the video [avi] the
Actual Rate hovers around 5fps. (Saved w/o compression) (Played in Win Media
Player to check. With the WMV file for email atch I get 6fps [100kbps])

Same thing if I record in RealPlayer [rm] format (under the RealVideo G2
codec). The Frame Rate is encoded at 30fps but the Current display reads
around 6fps. (For RealVideo the Bandwidth is 225 Kbps and the Bitrate is 193
Kbps...both reasonable.)

What's with my fps display? Is there anything I can do so the video will
play at the same rate it's recorded at? (I'm using RealProducer 7 as well as
the Capture ware that came with the camera.) Would upgrading to ImageStudio
7.3 help? (I have DirectX 8.0 installed at present. [btw on a PII 466 128MB
Win98]) The 'box' and 'site' both say the max fps is 30. I should at least
be able to get 15fps. Right?
Thanks...Brad

Is the Camera capable of the Resolution and FPS your trying ? If so is
your Pc powerfull enough to do this ?

It takes a bit of power to compress a file to 30 fps and at a decent
resolution.

The cam is set at 320 X 240 but can go 640 X 480 if I want! According to the
package and elsewhere it can record at 30fps, so even if I can't get THAT
high I should be able to get at least 15fps. Right?

I have a Celeron [PII] 466mhz 128MB w/ Win98. I'm OVER the min req. It's a
surprisingly stable system (considering) and I can PLAY avi, mpg, rm, etc
files rec'ed on other systems at 30fps w/o any problem.
If I was to close all my background apps and disconnect my other USB unit (a
Zip drive) you [anyone] think that'd help?

You may need to read what the package says closely. It may say it
can do 640 X 480 captures and it may say it can record at 30fps,
but it doesn't say it can capture 640 X 480 at 30fps. It probaly
can record 640 X 480 at 1fps and record 120X80 frames at 30fps,
which makes the origional claims on the package true.

I realize that I won't get 30fps at 640 X 480...but I think I should at
least be able at get 15fps at 320 X 240 with a decent kb/s rate. I'd like to
know how I can do THAT. I'd be happy with 15fps - 320X240 - ~ 100kb/s.
Anyone got any ideas?

What about changing codecs? I saw a video under the Mpeg video renderer that
had an Actual Rate of 29fps (made at 30). The mpeg 1 video decoder makes
vids at 30fps. The QuickCam software creates avi vids using a codec called
Indeo Video Decompression Filter. (Maybe the avi codec is making vids that
can only play at ~6fps)

Maybe I can make mpg's at a higher frame rate using an mpeg 1 codec. Here's
the big question tho: Do you think I can take a vid [avi] I made at 15 or 30
fps (where I'd normally get a playback at ~6fps) and using a converter (like
avi2mpg) it would then play at 15 or 30, like I reorded it? Does that make
sense? I think I'll give it a try.

If I MADE mpg files I'd have to get a pgm that did those -- the one that
comes with the cam ( as y'all know) makes avi vids. But if I could take
avi's and "convert" them to mpg's, all I'd need is the converter. I think
I'll try it like I said, but if it doesn't work (yeah, I doubt it will too)
what pgm should I use w/my cam (Logitech QuickCam Web) to create mpeg vids
at the higher fps and rate?
