I bought this PSU from new egg.
PSU ZALMAN| ZM400B-APS 400W RT
My Antec one which had the cable to add a PCI X card was doa so I got this as the closest replacement.
What I didnt check is if it had the cable or not, and well... it dosent.
I found on newegg that you can order an adaptor to take the regular molex connection on the PSU and make it the one that plugs into graphics cards.
I'm looking at something like a 7900gs or a low end 1900.
Is this psu good enough?
I didnt know how to check since I dont actually have the connector on the PSU.

That 400 Watt power supply has 18 Amps of 12 Volt power. ZM400B-APS 400W RT
I checked the nVidia video cards power requirements from http://www.evga.com/products/
7950GT 22 Amps
7900GS 20 Amps
7600GT 18 Amps
7600GS 18 Amps
For the ATI cards I checked http://www.guru3d.com/
1950 Pro 20 Amps
1900 GT 22 Amps
1650 Pro 18 Amps

Thats the minimum. I wouldnt push it.. add 2A to each of those.

(2amps over) Otherwise, you'l never hit peak performance with the card.

What if I got one that could connect two molex plugs into one pci express connector?
Would that not give me two rails at 18A, therefore making it powerful enough?

You'd still have one 12 volt 18amp rail.

What about for a SmartPower 2.0 450w?

It says only 15 and 17 amps, but it looks like it has 2 12v rails, would that let it handle bigger cards? Would it handle a 1950 Pro or XT?

12v1 and 12v2 don't nessesarily add up to be 32amps total. You'l need to find the manufacturers total on the PSU. As an ex., mine has 2 12v rails @ 21a each, combined max output @ 30a

No

Just try the Zalman you have with whichever card you choose.

Worst case is you might run into issues and buy a more powerful unit. I'm guessing you'll be fine though.

The 400w Zalman isnt good enough to run a 7900 GS.

You don't know that.

Of course I do. The Zalman dosent have enough power..

You don't even know the OP's system specs and you're writing off the PSU? If the OP already has it installed he might as well go ahead and try it with whichever card he goes with. There's no harm in it as he can always get another PSU later if he needs one.

Whats the amperage rating on the Zalman? Nvidia calls for 300 - 350w for the 7900GS.

What you are saying dosent make any sense.
If he already has it he should use it??

If he uses it his system will crash and die. What u dont seem to understand is that it is not enough for the 7900 GS. You cant just say "well lets just use it and see".

Thats the same as saying that u need a card with more than 128MB to play a game - it makes no sense, as the core is the only thing that matters. They just tell u 300-350w to get u off their back.

The 7900 GS dosent take a lot. The 400w Zalman gives 18A.. i would reccomend 24A, after all it is a high-end card.

Heh heh. Thats true. The wattage ratings are quite an open ended estimate. Theres no sense buying a card if you can't extract it's full potential. If I were him, I'd step back to a 7600GT.

Reply to blacken

It makes perfect sense as I do not want the OP to spend their money unnecessarily. If it was a generic no-name PSU then I would tell him to trade up, but Zalman's PSUs are made for them by FSP. It's a good quality PSU and worth keeping in the system as it will most likely work just fine. There's no point in buying a new one unless the OP has problems. You know, if it isn't broke, don't fix it.

And the 7900GS is considered mid-range by current standards.

EVGA 7600gt 99 bucks after 20 mail in at Tiger.

Reply to uwisuwerme7

That's a good price on the 7600GT. That Zalman should be fine for the 7600GT. Did you remember to order a PCI-E power adapter for it though?

Reply to Anoobis

It does not have the connector for it.

Reply to uwisuwerme7

:?:

That's what I meant. You said the Zalman didn't have a PCI-E GPU plug but that you found one on Newegg that would convert a standard 4-pin Molex into one. I was just asking if you remembered to pick one up when you bought the card.

Reply to Anoobis

The 7600GT does not require it.

I've been in several conversations here on 7300GTs, 7600GS/GTs in their AGP/PCI-E variants. I forgot that PCI-E 7600GTs don't require additional power but their AGP counterparts do. Sorry for the confusion. You'll have fun with that card. It's a good deal for the money. If you'd really like to see it shine, pair it up with FarCry ($10 on Newegg) and the FarCry 1.4 patch for some HDR fun.
