My friend was thinking about getting a 7900GS for his dell, but the question i have is do you think it would be a smart idea to run the card off the stock 375 watt PSU, or should he get a new PSU? He only has 170 dollars to work with

Thanks for the advice!!

I think the wattage should be fine but if the card needs extra power connectors i'm not sure a Dell PSU will have them.

The stock powersupply should have the connectors. What is your friend using as his current graphics card?

The PSU does have the extra connector.

I'm using a XPS410 with a 7900GS. Runs extremely stable, never had a restart or blue screen. This could be thanks to the PSU having 2 +12v rails, 21a a piece and 30a combined.
