Large Hadron Collider

here

Amoung the questions at the end of the article there is one that appears to be missing: Why? Why build such a thing? Why invest so much money, so much resources into this? Could not these resources have been better spent?

What difference will it make in the world if they do make "dark matter" or "tiny millionth of a millionth of a second black holes" or they detect the "Higgs Boson particule". How will that help solve the pressing problems humanity faces at this very moment, and i need not enumerate them.

Someone enlighten me about this please!

Hopefully it will go dreadfully wrong and flash fry the entire human race. Especially you.

Problem solved.

Personally i have nothing to do with all this but you have a point with something going drastically wrong. As they say they don't even know what they might create during their experiment.........

One of my clients is CERN in Switzerland. Very interesting stuff they do there.

I know: Leptons, Muons, Quarks and other "strange" particules. But HEY! what difference is it all going to make for us day to day pike, wingdings, lamas, chimps, tommysmartasses and whatever.....?

Reply to pike

i really don't think we have anything to worry about, i mean when have humans recklessly tested things they know nothing about?

4 000 000 000 USD to find out: Hey look! There are more particules in there! So what goddamit! Big f..king deal!!!!!!! Use that money to fixup the world in a more down to earth way..........It's not the discovery of a 1/1 000 000th of 1/1 000 000th of a second long tiny black hole that's going to resolve the food or energy shortage in the world.........unless you can eat the damned thing or pour in the gas tank!!!!!!!!1

To gain knowledge, silly. Apparently this is so obvious, even you missed it. To "protect" this mother earth and humanity as you so wish, we need to know how it works at the most basic levels. It's a no lose situation. Best case scenario, we learn a fundamental law of nature. Second best case scenario, arguably the first, we get wiped out.

I'd go with King's explanation.

And in other news, I saw pants in a clothing store the other day that claims to have nanotechnology in it.

I'm getting worried... my pants are going to become a grey goo and absorb me?

To gain knowledge when the knowledge that will potentially be gained will in no way help the human condition on earth is the height of arrogance. One more Titanic!

To "protect" mother earth? Ha! Please elaborate what you mean by that and please elaborate how what they may find from their own admissions will this help in this so called "protection"!

Tell me how it wouldn't. It's called exploring, even when you don't find what you're looking for, you still learn something.

I could spend half an hour writing a long post, explaining to Pike the principle of "blue skies research", and how often useful, practical technologies arise out of what appeared to be research purely for scientific knowledge.

I could, but I won't. Because Pike is clearly a retard and won't understand.

Let's give it a try: understanding the fundamentals of physics may give rise to very practical solutions to humanity's hunger for (usable) energy and materials.

I heard some scientists there at the LHC have clled the theoretical Higgs Boson particule the god particule. That illustrates very well the error of the whole process. They are expecting to find something godlike in something that's material . How arrogant!

First use the resources we have available in ending the inequalities that exist between nations and between peoples of the world, use the resources in educating the world population and building the infrastructures necessary for a minimum standard of living world wide and only then, once that is accomplished go out, or in, in search of a god or godlike particule.

retard? name calling again? you do know that that is the un mistakable prouf of someone who has little or no conviction in his arguments .

In the past pure scientific research has helped elevate mans' technological skills in many areas: electricity, phone, transportation, refrigeration etc etc, to attain a confortable standard of living. However, that was in the past and now what is needed is to make this relatively new found standard of living accessible to all of humanity. Finding 1, 2 or 222 new particules in subatomic research to then need another "machine" to investicate each of these even further will not bring water and food to those who struggle every day for these for simple survival.

Ah! I hadn't schrolled down the thread.

True, but do you beleive there is a significant possibility of that at the LHC? To discover electricity all that was necessary was a kite and a lenght of thin wire. Those were things that could be used in a practical and inexpensive way immediatly. everything was at hand for the practical application of electricity.

How so with the discovery of tiny black holes that exist for one millionth of one millionth of a second?

There is the concern among the scientific community that this LHC and perhaps other pure science projets have passed the thresshold of practical applications from pure scientific discoveries.

Again Pike, you look at things too deeply and it throws you off. Another perfect example of why you're lost and going in circles. It's used as a figure of speech, to show the importance of finding/proving such a particle exists.

Pike - I'm calling you names because you clearly are a bit dim. Even the smallest amount of reasearch (surely you have google in Canada?) would have been able to answer your question regarding the benefits of blue sky research.

When Rutherford was firing particles at a thin film of gold, I'm sure he wasn't thinking about nuclear power (or indeed weapons) - it was just research. Just because you can't see what benefits might arise from research, doesn't mean there won't be any.

Besides, what's wrong with knowledge anyway? Understanding how the universe works might help mankind understand it's place - and hopefully contribute towards despatching religion to the dustbin of history (although I doubt it).

So we could get a giant pot, and every dollar we earn goes into the pot, and then they pay for these things that you are proposing, then we all get an equal share of what's left!!!

They use the term "god" because they beleive what they may find may be a sort of absolute and ultimate particule. You don't use the term "god" or "godlike" to something that is a routine step along the way.

Unless you beleive they are now going to name these new particules for instence:

- godlike particule A
- godlike particule B
- etc

As you can see that makes little sense. So again, they have used that term because they in fact beleive they will find something "godlike" and how you may define that term is up to you.

Your missing the whole point. Rutheford was one man with perhaps a few assistants. The LHC has thousands of scientists spending millions of man hours and over 4 000 000 000 USD on it while those resources can be spent in a better way to elevate the human race.

How about:

We get a giant pot, and a part of our earnings go into it, and with that we elevate humanity with global programs of education etc, then with what's leftover we built those fancy pure science projects.
