When upgrading: Difference of 1 gig vs 2 gigs ?

Hi all,

I've used my setup for 2 yrs now and now looking to upgrade because I've been without a proper video card for awhile now and can't play any games (given my GeForce 6800 away to a friend). Bits and piece have been upgraded through the 2 yrs but the core remains an old XP 2500. So now I am looking to upgrade again to be able to keep up with the new games and maybe vista. I have never OC before but always wanted a system that is capable of that just in case. I don't ask for the best of the best just the best price / performance. With that said this is my current build:

- AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2500+ / Asus A7N8X v2.0 Deluxe / 2X 512 (333Mhz)
- NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440SE (AGP8X)
- Maxtor 300GB (ATA/100) / WD Raptor 36 GB
- 16X burner
- Antec 550 Neo HE
- Antec P180

The new stuff I am looking to buy:

- Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 [$182.90]
- SAPPHIRE Radeon X1950PRO Ultimate Video Card [$209.99]
- Either: Biostar TFORCE4U-775 nForce4 [$91.99]
or MSI P965 Platinum Socket T [$134.99]
(Both under recommendation from Tomshardware for value but still making up my mind on what to get)
- last but not least: 1 GB PC2-6400 [approx. $130] vs 2 GB PC2-6400 [approx. $240]

The brand of RAM is probably either OCZ or Corsair, which I found poplular on this forum. But the biggest question is to go either 1 GB or 2 GB. I don't do much graphics but might encode a few movies everynow and then. I also want my games to run under fairly nicely and smoothly. What I don't want to see is 1 GB being a performance bottleneck for this upgrade. Is 2 GB a luxury that I can consider upgrading to later once games become more demanding in requirements? Or is there a huge obvious impact on getting 2 GB of RAM?

they dont mind with other review sites, forums are a little different, but its still ok.

For gaming and vista 2gb's is a must, performance will increase across the board, sometimes a little, sometimes alot. The build looks ok, i like the Biostar board more then the MSI board. are you going to be oc'ing? that'll make a big difference on which ram to pick.

Thanks for the article Bjorn0, probably go with 2 Gigs. As for now, I'll probably not look to OC just yet because this setup is probably good for most apps and games. But I am curious as to why the Biostar over the MSI. And also, what is the best bang for the buck 2X 1 Gig pair of PC2-6400
