Find some shop that will do it for ya. As far as I know, they charge fairly reasonable prices, and will do it faster/better than anyone with no previous experience.
Unless its some rare/home-filmed movies that you have, why don't you download them off p2p networks, and simplify your life? convert them from avi to dvd if you like. The magnetic film in VHS tapes deteriorates with time, and by now the quality of those movies is probably hirrible.
any tv card made in the last 5 years incombination with a processor made in the last 4 should do this for you just make sure it has the correct inputs to be connected to your VHS there are plent of usb options around.
you will have to author and encode each of the files tho which i warn you is incredibly tedious.
if you have more than a couple to do i would open the yellow Pages
as it just happens i just fininsh copying my dads old VHS tapes to computer then DVD with an external usb device. heres what i used and it had good results.
I second the little boxy thing. Mine's a DVDXpress by ADS Tech that I got for something like $30. They work as advertised. Just don't expect more than VHSRip quality.
I would like to transfer my VHS movies to DVD, via my PC.
I am looking for a USB solution, any ideas?
Yes, your basic requirement is so easily met that you can randomly pick any external MPEG2 type device (which is all of them, nothing transfers raw over USB2, the bandwidth isn't there to do it).

Also, are there any good guides out on the internet on how to do this?
No guide needed, you install hardware, install software, press play on VCR and press record on software front end. Obviously I've left out a few steps, because of how obvious they are, like putting the tape in the VCR, like opening the resultant file in an video editor if you want to edit it, like launching a DVD burning app to get the file into DVD format and onto the disc.
