Modem is not able to get dialtone.Help!!!

It is a Dlink external modem which is working perfectly when I diagnose it through the computer.But it failed to get the dialtone and hence I cannot use it.As this is working ok in the modem diagnostic mode I guess there is simply some problem with some components inside.I opened it but don’t know how to check the components .Any one can help me for that?

Is it firmly connected to the phone line? If you plug in a phone to the same line, do you get a dial tone?

I have good experience in computer hardware and I am an electronics graduate.What I am telling is I confirmed the problem is with the modem hardware.I think changing some components can help(like resistors or capacitors)
