Hello I am very new to the wireless internet world, I have read in various threads that the wrt54gl is one of the best routers out there because you can use 3rd party firmware but wat i still dont understand is that by using diffrent firmware will this increase my distance, speed and performance or what does it exactly do. I currently have the wrt54g it was working great for the first week with a very strong signal, but these past days the signal have been very weak. I dont do a lot of heavy internet use just basic browsing.
When you use 3rd party firmware, it gives you option to control the power of the raidio. So you could crank it up to make marginal areas good. My USR already has this function. I only run on low power.
NetStumbler is a good program for running scans. I keep it on my desktop. It surprising how many 11b/g in my neighbor hood. You may have another 11b/g using the same channel or a 11n not playing well with you system. Run a scan a see if someone is close using the same channel, if so move to another chanel.
how does one know what firmware will work for them as far as features go, and is installing 3rd parte firmware just like installing a lynks firmware or does one have to have some special cables or tools.
You have to vist the sites offering the firmware. Most have a list of features as well as screen shots.
The upload is a ftp type, similar to Linksys, It's been over 18 mo since I did a linksys. so I can't say for sure. The sites have full instructions. Just upload through a wired port.
if your expressing low signal try to check if your router is using the latest firmware.and if you decide to use another firmware make sure that firmware is stable because it could backfire to you.
