Forum Old Man/Woman's Club : Other Ok, technical questions. . . .

Word :    Username :

I perused the motherboard, homebuilt, and NAS sections and could quite get a grasp that anyone there could answer all my questions with the frankness and detail I'd like, so here goes:

This is what I have:
2 LSI MegaRAID i4
1 WD 80JB
2 WD 80BB
2 WD 60BB

This is what I want to do:
I thought I might build a NAS (Thiking of FreeNAS. Being a m0n0wall adherent makes it that more attractive than say Windows Home Server / Server 2003. The LSI cards don't work with new linuxes)

My questions:
1) Disk configuration: Maybe RAID 5 the 80s and stripe (RAID 0) the 60s? RAID 10? JBOD? Something else?

2) Hardware configuration: The only published hardware requirement for FreeNAS is 96MB RAM. Which would be more power eficcient (All use the same power supply and NIC -- No optical drive, floppy, or video card)

  • K6 III+ (APZ 1.7) on a VIA MPV3 (Baby AT), 256 PC133 (single DIMM)

OR

  • AMD Duron 1600 (Applebred) on a KT266 (AK77 Pro). 512 PC333 (Single DIMM)

What if I undervolt / underclock?
Does disabling stuff in the BIOS turn it off or just hide it from the BIOS / OS?

What exactly are you planning on using the NAS box for? I know that windows itself won't have a problem reading and writing to the box. Some backup utilities do seem to flounder though. The utility, running under windows will, happily create your backups on the NAS box, and read them for a verify stage, if set to do so. The problems often arise when your OS has died and you boot from the CD supplied/created with the utility in order to read the image from the NAS box and re-image the windows box.

If that makes sense then fine, if not, have a read here. It's not just Acronis that can fall foul of this fcuk up either, as stated in the article, SMB and CIFS aren't the standards you'd expect them to be.

You won't need to undervolt or underclock, simply ensure you burn three hippies a month to offset your excessive carbon footprint. :D

That article's discussion of drive letters was intersting.

I'll be using for archival purposes-- photos and other important data-- a file server if you will.

I've had no problems with CIFS on FreeBSD or Linux (Well, I've only used Fedora and its derivatives (RHEL / CentOS) for the last 6 years).

For Windows, I've had no problems with DriveImage XML (except for you can only restore to a partition the same size or larger than the the partition imaged.) and BartPE does work fine with it.

Lately, I've preferred Mondo Rescue as it works fine with linux and 99% of the time with Windows. Mondo, though makes bootable sets of optical media so I only use it to create a baseline build of OS and critical apps and the data is on the NAS.

Acronis rulz!!!!!!!

tar pwns joo!!!!!!

We have a single copy of Acronis here at UPS, just for changing partition sizes... Pretty good stuff.

I love the ability to take an image of one machine and use it on completely different hardware, no fcuck ups with the HAL.

Really??? That could indeed be handy.....

All that the HAL requires is a 9000 appended to it.

Pshaw. . . do the same with anything (Windows NT-ish) as long as you know about sysprep (That's how Altiris did it, and I'm pretty sure that's how Arconis does it). With the Chicago kernel stuff you just blank the Enum-- but who uses that anymore, seriously?

As far as determining power consumption of my various hardware choices a K6 has a TDP of around 18-21 watts whereas my Applebred is around 45-57 (depending on who you believe). I guess transistor count is the deciding factor, yes? Same would go for VIA MVP3 vs VIA KT266/KT333. Long live Super 7!

Dwellman, there's always a chance...

This year seems to be better than others...

That's all I'll say about the large MLB event in the end of October...

I know about Sysprep. which is why I prefer Acronis.

Question, any reason for Raiding such small drives?

(I tried finding a ref to an 80BB and all I got were, not suprisingly, 80GB drives).

Anything under 150GB now, unless it is a 10,000 or SCSI drive, is pretty usless for the power and space it uses.

I would look for some cheapie 200-250's at bare minimum and go RAID1 or RAID5 (depending on #). If you are going performance, the 5 year guarantee on Seagate would go well with a striped set, just don't store anything important there.....

Pardon this if the 80BB/JB is a different model that Google/Pricegrabber could not find......

Because its what I have laying around. Also its an excuse to use FreeNAS, and bring some very old, probably worthless hardware out of retirement.

Mind you I've been at this "computer" thing a while (remember loading programs from 400 BAUD cassette players?), I just didn't have the time to wrap my head around some of my concerns, e.g. how to get the most out of drives of disparate size and the power efficiency of new hardware (CPUs and chipsets and RAM) versus old. But, three days after the fact, I've been able to peck away at it and come to some reasonable conclusions and put a Kill-A-Watt on my want list.

I don't disagree that these old drives are woefully inefficient, byte per watt, when compared to their more modern and denser bretheren; however, these drive have one thing the new one's don't, which is 1) they cost exactly $0.00 and likewise 2) if they (and / or the rest of the system) give up the ghost I'm out absolutely nothing.

P.S. Seriously, you didn't know or recognize Western Digital nomenclature?

Dwell, I did, but I just did not think you would keep them around! (I was looking and telling myself, "No, I must have this wrong, 80G??!?" ;))

I mean, I thought I was bad about 5 years ago when I was still keeping my 8 and 16 gig drives around "JIC"...ok, I was bad keeping them around.

I guess that is the point. I just got rid of my 12X CD-R and my 6X DVD player (yes, only 6 and no "R" ) that I have not touched in 4 years.

The only reason I ask is because if you eventually want to use this as serious NAS and possibly expand it, 80G really limits what you can do.

I have 5x500G on my 3-ware 8 right now and it is very handy, but I am even thinking of swapping out o 3x1TB soon... I don't know what to do with the "old" 500G's!!!!! Swap out my Athalon 2800 with the 160G system drive maybe? ;)

Whatever.... I am just going crazy at home trying to install Ku-up-your-arse-tu. Nice program, very slick, but like listening to someone with a swahilii accent giving you directions through Boston.

You will get lost.

Yeah some stuff was lying around, actually forgottten about, and other stuff literally from the trash bin at previous workplaces.

I stopped building / upgrading desktops (personally and professionally), er, what is it now. . . five years ago. Only do laptops now.

Then again maybe I won't do anything after all. None of these junk cases I have lying around have more than 3 3.5 bays. . . I guess I could rig a suspension thing up in the 5.25 bays.

NH, if you have to dispose of your 500Gb drives, please do so responsibly.

Send them to me, I'll make sure it happens the right way.

You can keep the Coors Light ads, or send them... Whatever. pr0n and mp3's are good. I'll, uh, erase them...

Damn Ryan Madson. Stupid Chad Durbin. Yeah, Madson has done this before in big games. Oh, yeah, Jef is so smug today. Yeah, he's happy the cubbies survied Hamels. Then again, Utley's flyout almost made it. And I'd be concerned that all of Wood's outs were via the flyball-- yet again he did pitch to the top of the order.

No, I think he's holding out for Michael Bolton and New Kids On the Block, and Maybe some Vanilla Ice and Color Me Badd just to keep it real, you know.
