I am looking at the WD5000YS and WD5000KS and wondering what the actual difference is. Comparing each side by side at newegg doesn't tell me much:

To me the enterprise drive seems more appealing have the 5 year warranty, but I don't know which would actually be best for my application.

The YS models are put through a good deal of testing... used for servers from what I have read.

YS will give you a little more peace of mind when considering the possibility of crashed drives.

Though nothing is written in stone.

A few technicians I have spoke with about it all suggested the YS over other.

one is an enterprise model (Y), the other is a desktop model (K).

enterprise is designed for 24/7 operation. it has very little noise dampening properties so it is louder. 5 year warranty.

desktop model is designed to be very quite, the extra noise dampening will sometimes cause drives to run at a higher temperature and reduce its lifespan. 1 year warrant with extensions available.
