Ultra cheap overclocking build.

I'm going to build a computer pretty much solely to learn how to build from scratch, and learn to overclock. I've read OC guides but the best way to learn is to actually do it. I've done everything from a motherboard swap down to adding ram so I kinda know my way around computer hardware. I have everything minus the CPU/MoBo/PSU.

I don't know where to start to look for a CPU. A guy said to get a Celeron D Cedar Mill. And right here I've read Pentium D 805s are the cheapest to go. $59 is alot cheaper than $93.

I want the motherboard to be compatible with a Powercolor X800GTO PCI-E, SATA HD, and 2 sticks of 512MB DDR400 2.5V memory (but I would upgrade to DDR2 if I must.) Of course I want all the bells and whistles in the bios at the cheapest price. I'm guessing I should stay away from ECS. I know the GA-965P-DS3 is great, but it's expensive at $130+.
Are the ASUS P5GPL-X SE Socket T $70, or ASRock 775Dual-VSTA Socket T $60 boards any good to start out with?

I'm getting my parts from Newegg, along with a 400W Hipro PSU $20.

Epox motherboards seem to be tailored to overclockers' needs. I suggest you check them out, especially if you're on a budget. Cedarmill's are single core, don't forget that. If you want performance - go with D, either 805 or 820, they can overclock damn well.

ok wait a min you learnt how to overclock before learning how to build a pc wow talk about jumping the gun.

If you think overclocking is hard trying building a pc from scratch without doing anything wrong, it can be a real fucking pain lol.

and really you should get your pc working and everything going before even thinking of overclocking.

No way! At least get the Pentium D915 if you have to go with Intel's budget chips. Hell, even the E6300 is very cheap and overclocks like a monster.

look, the guy was comparing a $59 and a $93 CPU, saying the former is a lot cheaper. and you're talking about E6300? which costs around 180? that's not the segment he's aiming at, coz he's clearly on a budget.

You'll want a Celeron D 331 because it's $50 and consumes around half the power of a Pentium-D 805. When overclocked, it will consume less than half the power.

You can't relly on the "cheap" 805 for getting a huge overclock on the cheap, because it requires so much power and cooling.

Thank you for the help. Well, I went with the Intel Pentium D 805, the Asus P5L-MX mobo, and Wintec Ampo 1GB DDR2 667 Ram. I'll let everyone know how it goes if you guys want.

It came out to around $280 with a cpu cooler, way more than I wanted to spend, but I guess it'll be worth it if my little experiment works. I just wanted first hand experience before I overclock my e6600 on a p5b-e. I don't want to mess with it before I know what I'm doing, hence that's why I'm building this throw-away PC from mostly left over parts.

sure lol, if I mess up and fry everything. it's yours

actually, i was planning to use it as my experiment box. ie installing different linux distros; windows vista without paying for it, and see how long it lasts before the piracy function kicks me out; have it online with no firewall, anti-virus, or anti-spyware then going to porn sites and trying to get as much malware as possible; go crazy with a dremel tool on the case, etc.
