I'm building a system around a C2D E6300 with 2 GB of PC2-667 RAM.

I have narrowed down my GPU selections to the ATI Radeon x1900GT and the Nvidia 7900GS. I plan on upgrading to a DirectX 10 card later this year, so I want to keep the price under $180.

Which of these two card would you guys recommend?

I'd vote for the x1900GT because it's newer, cheaper and proven to be highly competitive, if not better, with the 7900GS.

Radeon. The tech behind it is somewhat more advanced and up-to-date than that of 7X00 series

Exactly.

The 1950 is nice but if your going to replace your video for a dx10 one towards the end of the year I would go with this:

$150 dollars not as good as the 1950 but better than say a 7600gt that run around the same price.

X1900 GT.

The X1950 PROs are marginally better, but the X1900 GT is much cheaper, and will actually overclock much higher than an X1950 PRO.

Any reason the x1900gt would overclock higher than an x1950pro? I thought the x1950 was on a smaller production process (80nm vs 90nm) so wouldn't that be the better overclocker?

Yeah, it's simply a matter of compliance. Nobody has figured out how to overclock the X1950 PROs yet, none of the overclocking tools work well with them. They muddled up the BIOS on them or something.

Keep in mind that nearly all nVidia based cards (including 7xxx's), recirculate hot air inside the case. ATI started using dual slot rear exaust cooling solutions with the X850, and continued the trend from the X1800's thru the X1950's.

nVidia finally adopted the dual slot rear exaust cooling solution with it's new 8800's. This is why I chose an X1900. If you want your case to run cooler without being modified, you may prefer a 19xx series card. Also, remember to include enough PSU ampacity to support your new card.

I hope this helps you, and good luck with your selections. :D

The 1800 XL, X1800 GTO, X1900 GT, and I believe X1950 PRO don't spit hot air outside the case, they also recirculate air. So not all Ati cards spit it out the back of the case.

This really isn't that big a deal unless you're into overclocking or have insufficient circulation in the first place.

Regardless, that $150 X1900 GT on newegg is probably the best bang for the buck available right now...

I'd also like to add that the first dual slot consumer card that I know of was the 5800 from Nvidia. This put them behind ATI in yet another way, as ATIs cards were not only more powerful, but required only a single slot.

pls show me a dx10 game? what, there is none? oh bummer. wha? crysis has been postponed untill sep 07! double bummer!

Get the 1950 pro and be happy until summer 07, then get the best dx10 gfx card for your budget. 7600gt sucks big time compared to the 1950, also 7900gs. Unless you can get a 1900gt for much less (open box etc).
