I have cable internet and hooked it up with no problems with my desktop (asus 8nxe, AMD64 32000+, blah blah)

But when I tried to plug my laptop (toshiba on XP home edition, nothing special) into the same ethernet wire it doesn't work? I have used the laptop at my school plenty of times without a problem. But when I plug it into my cable internet it says "limitted or no activity" after searching for ip address.

Anyone have a clue as to what the problem is?

Register or log in to remove.

Try releasing the lease and renewing it or simply click repair connection in windows xp. See if that helps.

I tried repairing it but it stops and says can not finishe repair, renewing IP address failed, or something to that effect.

How do I release the lease and renew it?

With the IPCONFIG command but doing the repair function does this automatically for you. Are you strait hooking the cable from your modem to your computer/s? or are you using a router? If you are strait hooking it from your modem then your modem may be jumbled with your regular computers MAC address. Try hooking the computer up and reseting your modem. That should work. Basically pulling the plug out and waiting about 10 seconds and plugging it back in. It will refresh all the info. Although you would have to do this constantly back and forth between PC and LT.

Yeah, straight hookup. Good idea. I've been hitting the reset button on the modem but I guess unplugging it is the only way to be sure it resets. I do have a small router lying around that I can hookup I guess. That way I can plug both in to the cable internet and perhaps it won't be a problem.
maybe I should try that too.

oh and thanks for th help!

No problem I hope that works for you.

Good Luck!!

Just a note:

Some ISP are tied to the MAC address of the computer that was used to start the service. If this is the case, you may need to clone your MAC address in to the router.
